Before we started observing, we tried to find out basic information about our tree

White birch, also warty birch, is a deciduous tree from the birch family.

Male dogwoods are overhanging, they are about 4-7 cm long, they appear in April to June.

The fruits are about 2 mm in size and they are very light.

Fruiting begins at the age of 10 to 15 years.

It grows as a sturdy tree in the lowlands, but also as a dwarf tree high in the mountains or in the north in a cold climate.

4. We share our observations on

- we liked this activity, it was nice to come up with sentences in English together, sometimes we did it quickly, sometimes we had to think a lot

- we also realized how important English is

We are really happy, that we have joined this Campaign...

We learned a lot of new things about nature and also we practised our English. We also enjoyed working with data where we saw the results of the work in a graph

We are very happy that our work is important, because the data from each observation is used not only in forestry, agriculture or ecology but also in health care, tourism or in Citizen Science.

2. We determined the dominant color for each leaf using the GLOBE COLOR SCALE

.... as you can see, we had a lot of fun with this activity :-)

We compared our data with the other schools... and for example

according to the graph of the secondary school in Slovakia near Poprad, the leaves of their birch fell a week earlier

another birch that was observed by a school in the town of Karlovac in Croatia fell 16 days later than ours

and the closest to our graph was a birch tree that was monitored by a school in Vilnijus - it fell only 2 days later

2. Using the COMPASS mobile application, we tried to determine the cardinal points, record the coordinates and determine the altitude .....we enjoyed this activity a lot

1. In the first activity, we chose a tree to observe. We could choose from 7 trees.

We are students of the 6th grade at the Primary School in Luhačovice in the Czech Republic. We are 11 or 12 years old.

In September 2022 we decided to join the Autumn Phenology Campaign of the Globe Programme.

3.Observing tree twice a week

We started our observation on September 22nd. We used a recording sheet to record our observations

-we first used an estimate to measure the height of the tree -then we tried to use the Globe Observer application as well

we determined the height of the tree

here is a detail of the graph, we think we managed to capture the change in leaf color nicely :-)
