The TREE we observe - Silver Birch (Betula Pendula)

4. We took photos of the tree using the GrowApp. We can see how our tree has changed since March up to now

Before we started observing, we tried to find out basic information about our tree

White birch, also warty birch, is a deciduous tree from the birch family.

Male dogwoods are overhanging, they are about 4-7 cm long, they appear in April to June.

The fruits are about 2 mm in size and they are very light.

Fruiting begins at the age of 10 to 15 years.

It grows as a sturdy tree in the lowlands, but also as a dwarf tree high in the mountains or in the north in a cold climate.

We compared our data with the other schools...

Our first measurement of the leaves was on the 28th March and the last one was on the 19th May.

OS Banija in Croatia the first measurement was on the 10th March and the last 10th May.

OS Durmanec in Croatia the first measurement was on the 4th April and the last ont he 29th April

Lithuania Globe school Vilnijus Fabijoniškes Gymnazium the first measurement was on the 28th April and the last on the 14th May.

We are very happy we have participated in the Spring Campaign of the Globe program. We took part in Phenology  Campaign already in autumn, so now we know a lot about the entire vegetation cycle of our birch tree.

Hello, we are students of the 6th grade at the Elementary School in Luhačovice in the Czech Republic. We are 11 or 12 years old.

In February 2023 we decided to join the Spring Phenology Campaign of the Globe Programme.

We chose one branch that was low enough and marked it with a ribbon We marked 4 buds on a south facing branch of our tree that we will observe

We observed the buds twice a week: - For each bud, we recorded at what stage it is: • “dormant” if the bud is unchanged. • “swelling” if the bud is getting bigger. • “budburst” the first day you see the green tips of leaves. • “lost” if the bud or leaf gets lost or damaged.

we hypothesized that leaves grow faster when it's warmer and raining....

The leaves grew the most in the period between 21st April and 25th April.

From 11.4. to 18.4. the average temperature started to increase up to 12.7 degrees (18.4.) and precipitation was 8.7 mm (14.4.) and 8.1 mm (25.4.) During this period, the temperature of the soil (in 10 cm) also started to rise to about 12 degrees.
