COVID-19: Through the Distorted-Looking Glass

I made this drawing because it feels like this pandemic is going to last forever, and I just want it to be over all ready.

I enjoy making art when the rules aren’t strict and when I don’t have to worry about my art being “good” it lets me be more creative and open to my artwork. I have experimented using not just pencils and paper in my art but using grass, and stones, and leaves, and yarn and other materials I can find. I am growing as an artist because I am more open to different kinds of materials and art.

Covid has been very sad and scary for a lot of people, I made this drawing to represent that.

I made this piece of art because it shows all the emotions and things that have happened in 2020 are all mixed up and unpredictable.

This piece I made here is pretty simple. I was feeling music at the time and when I was painting this I was listening to one of my playlist and al the lyrics were speaking to me so that's why I named it "Music is Life". Music helped me a lot during the beginning of the pandemic

This art right here was supposed to be something else and then I had made a mistake so I turned it into something else .

The Idea for this piece of art I created was emotion. I was feeling a lot of emotions, just thinking about the covid-19 and what it has done to my 2020 senior year. The moon represents life its self and the tears are feelings; rather they be happy or sad tears. What the moon has in its mouth it a covid-19 relief stick. I am intaking everything this year that has been thrown at me and releasing it all out.

It just feels so surreal it just feels as if someone put a pause on my life I haven't been able to get my life plans going collage is not something I am prepared for at the moment never though I would live to see something like this epidemic in my whole life time we were just so happy and free I think I took everything for granted not knowing one day this could really happen why did everything have to change so quickly.

Kasandra Alvarado I was in 8th grade when this whole thing started I was so excited to have continuation and being able to start a new chapter in life going into high school even thought all my friends would be going into different high schools but I'll be kinda honest I needed a break from school it was all getting to overwhelming for me and not to mention I was diagnosed with anemia and had low iron deficiency, low sodium and low blood sugars and my anxiety got worse and worse by the second it was draining me but I had my friends and family support I love them so much and I appreciate everything they do

I was looking forward to starting a new chapter and closing the one behind me I had promised myself everything was going to be great I was devastated it was as if life was taken that opportunity from me I was heartbroken because none of us realized that was the last time we would ever see each other we didn't even get to say goodbye.

Artist Statement: This project I believe represents what COVID is as a whole. It is just a huge storm that is piling up and isn´t over yet. I wanted to make the background seem as it was old burnt up newspapers that talked about what is happening during this COVID time. The two men in this piece are George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery. George Floyd was killed during an arrest where a white officer has kneed on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds while Floyd cried and screamed he couldn´t breathe. In his last minutes he kept calling for his mom. Ahmaud Arbery was an unharmed 25 year old man who was shot while jogging. These two deserve their justice and are one of the reasons why the BLM protest had begun. Although she is not added Breonna Taylor who was shot in her home is also another huge part of the BLM protest. Even with the protest, the hashtag trend #saveourchildern, talks about child trafficking and abuse and how it is a huge problem we need to address. There have been many stories of people child hoods, and even now we still need to spread awareness over this issue. I also decided to add a trump meme saying how he is a clown, just thought it added to the who ciaos of this piece. Another issue is the missing immigrant children that were in ICE detention centers. Many videos and images have been leaked about the condition these children are in and it is horrifying how people can treat mere child. These children are being kept in cages and ripped apart from families. Another issue which has been going on for a while is global warming, but in particular the insane amount of fires that the US has been having it feels as though our world is just crashing and burning from every which angle. I wanted to draw a beautiful women to showcase black beauty and wanted it to stand out from the rest of the huge piece. This piece just shows how much has happened since the start of COVID and how it feels like it will never end.

Through covid, many people struggled with depression, especially during the summer. Being trapped inside with nothing to do and no one to see really took its toll on mental health.

I feel so breathless. Everything around me is stopping. Why is this happening, everything was going fine. I feel as if I am in this ongoing cycle that never seems to end. Like I am going up these stair that just never stop. And every time I thought they were over there was just more and more stairs ahead of me. I thought I was never going to escape this cycle. But I thought of this quote by one of my favorite artists, "... this too shall pass, that these will become fond memories" and it just made me realize that eventually everything will be okay. And I can't wait for these hard and stressful days to become fond memories.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;This book of my art has helped me grow in creativity and being able to express myself through art and even help me express emotion in the year 2020 as well. The subjects in these art pieces range from protests to isolation as a result of Covid-19 as a result of all of the mixed events occurring in 2020. By expressing emotions through the year of 2020, I am making something I love by combining the good and bad and embracing my emotions, creating something that I love as well. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The art I have created is a visual story as it shows the steps many have taken in 2020 to try to resolve this world's issues, which have drastically changed in the last 1-2 years. For example, showing art that represents the protests occurring in 2020 such as Black Lives Matter have demonstrated a story, and visualizing this has created a story you can see in 1-2 pages as well. This is a unique story as it shows my specific perspective on 2020 and does not rely on anyone else’s art to express my emotions, showing a unique story as well. The art in this book helps express my truth through expressing my good/bad emotions in 2020, helping me express the sad truths about 2020, expressing my truth as well. This has been shown through expressing my emotions on the protests, and how they have affected all of our lives, expressing my truth, as well as many others as well.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Through this book, I will continue to grow as an artist by drawing and creating work that helps me release emotions on any given topic, no matter what that topic may be. In my artistic journey, I am most proud of being able to finally express needed emotions through art, and not even have to really speak of the issue as well. In the 2nd quarter, I would like to express my emotions on many other topics, therefore, increasing my artistic ability even more as well.

I chose the monologue, No Release, because I have not only seen myself, but I've seen my family members experience the sense of loss that this monologue portrayed. Death, the loss of a loved ones feels like a bullet shooting through your heart. The times we are in are not in the slightest easy, so many people are struggling and grieving. But part of this monologue and part of my project was to show people that they aren't alone, so many people are experiencing the pain you are. It's okay to feel this way, and it's okay to feel down. I have been creating art, and making art, to just let out all of my feeling about 2020, because it is such a crazy, and weird year, that I think it is important to document how I am feeling about 2020, in some form, so I am doing it through my art. 2020 for me was just a lot of quarantine and chillin.

Alexis Reyes- "I saw George Floyd and Ahmaud Abery and it made me think this piece of art would focus on the BLM movememet and the fight against police brutality in America because they were both faces of the movement. Ahmaud wearing a mask was interesting because it shows that there are multiple hardships in 2020 and we all have to adapt to them. The time lapse was exciting because we got to see the process of the work. The flowers surrounding the portraits were meaningful because it was a sign of respect towards the people who died in such tragic situations." I am growing as an artist by trying new kinds of art and not the same thing that I'm used to. The subjects I have chosen to focus on are BLM, LGBTQ+ rights, and Freedom in America. I&nbsp;attempted to make something that I support by showing all&nbsp;the different things I&nbsp;show pride in. &nbsp;My art is a visual story because it is showing different things that happened in 2020 like the LGBTQ+ community getting&nbsp;the same rights as everyone else, or the movement that happened with the black lives matter movement that happened in 2013 but got really big this summer.&nbsp;I use my art to tell the truth because I am saying that I support the LGBTQ+ community and the BLM movement. I would like to accomplish new things like new drawings and get out of my comfort zone in the 2nd quarter. I will continue to grow as an artist by not giving up on new drawings and to keep pushing forward. One thing that I am most proud of in my journey is trying new things and not being afraid that someone is going to judge me for showing what I believe me.

The reason I drew this was because sometimes I would get lost in my own thoughts and feel like a different person. It wasn't anything sad it was just wondering about everything that was happening.

This beat wasn't really inspired but 2020 has been harsh though this crazy time. I called this mixed feelings because a lot came to mind when I think about the year 20'. I know this beat wont express and connect to what i'm going to say but I at least hope you understand and put it to use. but also you listen till the end of the song. Jump is a love and its always on my mind. People always make me promises and promises but never fulfill them, I care to much and i've definitely cared to much when there have been times that i've been f'ed over. Creation and evolution was my main focus and every day you evolve, you evolute in mind, you evolute as far as your age, you evolute physically and mentally. There will always be that one time that you would like to become the villain and debut that it would be fun because it doesn't attract anything that you really want; Its better to be respected trough love rather than fear because fear is not real love and drives people away and it's not something you would want. No one can tell you who to be because the key to love is loving yourself and compromise. Its easier to live when you have goals to meet. Trying to impress others would not work; make yourself happy, if something makes you happy... follow it, being healthy in mind and caring will explain why you're alive today.

I wanted to tell my visual story by showing how the year started off good but just got worse as time went on. You can see the visual story because specifically in my art on paper because on the left side it's a nice city with people living their lives normally but on the right side of the picture it's complete chaos. I also chose to put coronavirus in the sky because I thought it could represent how it has dominated our lives for the past year. With this art i really wanted to focus on how the year went in a complete opposite direction than what most people expected.

&nbsp;In my artwork, I am allowing myself to enjoy the process by not setting limitations on art mediums. During my art, I have experienced vulnerability because I am making my emotions and personal connections to covid public through my artwork. As an artist, I have grown because I have learned to accept imperfections in my artwork, and even incorporated imperfections into my art style. I have become more human during this process because I have taken time to acknowledge my emotions surrounding covid and reflect on my experiences within the past months.&nbsp;I have chosen to focus on the emotional and social impacts of covid. &nbsp;I am using art as an outlet to express my emotions I have experienced during covid. Additionally, I have used art to show how covid had affected my social connections and how I have adapted. This artwork is personal because it is based upon my experiences of not being able to identify my emotions and how I personally tried to connect with others in times of isolation. This artwork helps convey a message that it’s verbal counterpart could not. My individuality has been shown in my work because I utilized abstract art and I was the only person who used yarn as a medium. I will continue to grow as an artist by exploring other mediums and art styles. I am most proud of learning how to knit because it is a useful skill. Additionally, for my first knit piece, it had good quality. In second semester, I would like to learn how to draw people.

During Corona, people found new hobbies to compensate from being quarantined. Many of these hobbies and skills would not have been discovered and explored if it were not for corona. Something I learned how to do during this time was how to knit. I was taught how to knit by my grandmother who my family visited after quarantine. This skill offered me a way to stay more connected with my grandma, despite not seeing her often because of Covid. 

Corona has evoked various emotions. Most of the time, these emotions are difficult to identify and distinguish from each other. This piece is about how emotions can blur together in times of chaos.

I hadn't seen anyone else do a podcast, her project was very unique. The coolest thing about her project was how she portrayed that yes times are hard, the worlds crazy but if any of us could go back to the day COVID all started and had the choice to make it not happen at all, many of us wouldn't. Everything happens for a reason and through this we became stronger and we became the version of ourselves that we are now."

When I wrote this song I was stressing about college applications and just trying to figure my life and myself out while knowing I had to turn in my final projects. The original song is the ending song to Steven Universe, which I have been obsessed with. I feel like this song just truly shows how my brain works and how I have felt about myself during COVID.

I'm going be honest 2020 has been one of the worst years. We have the worst president who hasn't done anything to stop the pandemic, to stop racism against Latin and Black people, kids being separated from their families, people being killed for their believes or for no reason. COVID-19 has first started in Wuhan, China and has spread to many countries, our president Donald trump has not done anything to stop the virus from coming to the United States even though he knew it was a really serious thing but yet has not done anything but say things such as, " The virus will disappear" and many more things as if it was to disappear that fast without doing nothing about the pandemic and now he has tested positive for COVID-19.

One of my favorite songs to listen to when covid-19 started was this song this is because it made me feel happy it was something i could jam out to and dance to it just made me happy. His songs made me feel like i could just go to a different world and be myself.

Amine is one of my favorite artist his songs just give off a different feeling. I really like this song because it gives me energy and i really love it. He is such an amazing artist and i hope one day i could meet him.

My artist statement: Over the past couple weeks I have attempted to make a few art pieces and I truly did not like the way they turned out so I basically painted a tiny piece of art but also used words for COVID to explain how difficult this has been. As an artist I have learned to add on to my art if I don't like it then I will possibly like it. The subjects I have really focused on racism and feelings such as being lonely. We know this is my visual story and not just a generic story about 2020 because this art piece is mine and these are in my own words. My art piece is all about what is going on.&nbsp;I use my art pieces to speak my truth of what is going on and how i am feeling about it.&nbsp;In reflecting on my work I think I have grown as an artist of learning more of learning how to draw and use more colors such as only the certain colors I like. When I listened to this song I felt as if I could relate to it because with everything going on it's like when is this going to end you get sick of it. You start to get sick of being home all day, not being able to hang out with friends. But then you realize that it is important to be doing these things but you just start to get sick of it.

This song from childish gambino is amazing. It's a song I listen to when I am angry at some one or just mad in general. I do not know why but it calms me down and makes me feel more at peace.

I have a passion for designing and building things so my art is some of my favorite designs I’ve made recently. I like this type of art because it’s not really making any sort of statement or anything but it’s just pure creativity and allows for new ideas and making weird things work. My art is how I express my passion for 3D design and working with your hands. It’s a lot of what is getting me through the year and more than that my work is profitable. I’m speaking my truth with it because it is what I am passionate about and the message or statement is up for interpretation so there is no obvious meaning which is important to me because our country is in such a state of polarization. In my work I have accurately portrayed my style of creativity and art. People aren’t often exposed to my kind of art so i feel like it will add a unique couple of pieces to the art book.

TITLE: AN INTERVIEW GONE WRONG. My project is a brutal satire towards right wing conservative attitudes towards COVID-19 and focuses on a greedy billionaire who does not believe the virus is legitimate and causes trouble during an interview. I wrote this one morning in thirty minutes for this project and decided to roll with it. While the final result isn't exactly what I was expecting, I'd like to think that it turned out better than I thought it would have originally, especially since this is the final result of three different ideas. It gives me a lot of pride to know that I was able to make a strong song after flipping ideas for projects a couple times that were a little too ambitious or wasn't exactly what I was looking for. I'm glad that it fleshes out into an amazing song. The lyrics are on the right side of the page.

This Book contains the things that I like and it is my favorite part of it. The book also contains unexpected and sad things that we are unfortunately going through. 2020 has undoubtedly been a very difficult and different year.

Over the past 10 months, we have experienced a year like no other, 2020. For many people this year will always be associated with pain, loss, deprivation, and injustice. While others may reminisce about the breakthroughs they made within themselves and their families. My experiences from this year are truly a mixed bag of both good and bad, which I hoped to express through my art. In this book there is only one piece of art that is being showcased. While I could dive into what every part of that drawing means, I feel like it is a waste of time. Instead I want to tell you about my process because to me it truly coincides with how my year has been thus far. When we were originally assigned this project, my mind was flowing with ideas of paintings, drawings, and sketches I could do.&nbsp;However, when I tried to sit down and execute these ideas my attention span ran out and I hated the product. I hated my product because it was not the exact thing I wanted. My process so far is much like my year because my hope and drive for things I love dies out the moment something doesn’t go the “right” way. I have been unable to adjust to hurdles that pop up, while I am in stride.&nbsp; These issues surrounding perfectionism are ones that I hope to work on throughout the year and especially in this class. Art is the perfect outlet for this because as the great Oscar Wilde said, “it is through art, and through art only, that we realise our perfection.”

Artist Statement

         For my project, I wanted to focus on how mental health was affected by COVID 19 and quarantine. I am usually very closed off and mask what I am thinking, but I wanted to step out of my comfort zone to make art about something that is very important to me. I also know that many people have struggled with it and especially during this time it has become a bigger problem.&nbsp;&nbsp;

My art is inspired by the masks we wear to protect ourselves and others from coronavirus but also the masks we put up ourselves to protect our emotions and thoughts. I used the actual mask as a metaphor for the emotional mask and that someone can smile with their eyes but have a different emotion when they show their whole face. I want to do more abstract art in the 2nd quarter, I am a perfectionist and stray towards realistic drawings but I want to improve by allowing myself to express myself without making a super realistic person or object. This will also help me become more human because I will be able to accept imperfections in my art.&nbsp;

I have experimented with being more creative in art class since I am at home and have more time to think about it. I am using my art to show how the year 2020 has had an effect on stores. I am attempting to make something that I want to look at and remember what 2020 was like. I want my art to make memories of this weird and very unusual year and I want to share it with people because everybody is experiencing this year a different way. I am growing as an artist by learning how to express myself through art and putting my thoughts into the art. So far through my art I have been a little more challenged to express myself and my creativity. Growing as an artist means working on finding more ways in order to express myself and challenge myself into creating more pieces of work. Overall I've put more focus on talking about the anxiety and emotions/thoughts experienced throughout 2020. Art that I'm creating is focused on the anxiety or growth I've seen or experienced throughout this year recently. I’m mainly focused on seeing the thoughts and feelings people, along with me, have felt or experienced throughout the past year. I’m using my art to talk about the feelings or thought I might not know how to express or talk about. When reflecting and responding on my works, I think my individuality has been shown by the use of colors to express myself. I will continue to grow as an artist by putting in the effort to grow with skills and understanding of art, and trying to adventure out in order to find a/more ways to grow as an artist. I think finding more ways in order to express myself and my emotions and even others, is the main way I will be able to become more human. I think I’m proudest of trying to find my own way in order to grow as an artist. In the 2nd Quarter I would like to accomplish more diversity for artistry and art expressions.
