Napoli tra miti e leggende

Sull'origine di Napoli ci sono tanti miti e leggende diversi tra loro, ma una cosa li accomuna tutti: Napoli è stata fondata&nbsp;con amore e per amore. L’amore e la passione sono il fondamento della nostra città.

There are a lot of different myths and legends about the origin of Naples. They all have one thing in common:&nbsp;Naples&nbsp;was founded&nbsp;with love and for love. So, we can surely&nbsp;say that love and passion are the foundation of our city.

LA LEGGENDA DI CASTEL DELL’ OVO

Si racconta che tanto tempo fa nel mare di Napoli vivevano delle splendide sirene che deponevano le loro uova fantastiche sulla spiaggia. Un giorno il poeta Publio Virgilio Marone,&nbsp;da tutti considerato anche grande mago, ne raccolse uno e credendolo magico lo&nbsp;sistemò in una caraffa di vetro piena d’acqua protetta da una gabbia di ferro, che poi appese a una pesante trave di quercia posta in una camera sotterranea di Castel Marino . Da allora il Castello venne chiamato dell’Ovo. Se l’uovo fosse stato ritrovato o si fosse rotto tutto il castello sarebbe sprofondato in mare ed una serie di sventure avrebbe colpito la città di Napoli.

The legend of Castel dell'Ovo

According to this legend, the castle takes its name from the famous Latin poet&nbsp;Virgil&nbsp;who would have hidden, inside a cage, an enchanted egg. The egg would have been put by the ‘magician’ poet inside a glass pitcher full of water protected by an iron cage and hung on a heavy oak beam, then placed in a room in the basements of the castle. Until now, nobody has never found the magic egg and the place where it would have been conserved was kept secret for long time because on ‘that egg all the facts and the fortune of Castel Marino depended’ (as the castle was called). In fact, the legend tells that, until the egg had not broken, the city and the castle would have been protected against every sort of calamity. Nevertheless, if something had happened to the egg, there would have been troubles for Naples and the Neapolitans.

Partenope era una sirena che abitava le coste del golfo di Napoli. Un giorno, le si avvicinò un centauro dal nome&nbsp;Vesuvio. Eros&nbsp;non aspettò un secondo per scagliare il suo dardo, facendo innamorare perdutamente Vesuvio e Partenope. I due giovani erano molto felici di condividere il loro amore, fino a quando&nbsp; Zeus, a sua volta innamorato di Partenope, decise di separare per sempre i due amati. Così trasformò Vesuvio in un&nbsp;vulcano&nbsp;posto ai confini del golfo, in modo che la sirena potesse sempre vederlo ma non toccarlo. Partenope non potendo sopportare l’idea di non avere più il suo amato con sé, si uccise. Le onde trascinarono il suo corpo sulla costa dell’isolotto di&nbsp;Megaride&nbsp;e assunse la forma di una città incantevole.

The myth of Partenope e Vesuvio

Another variant of the Parthenope myth told&nbsp;that&nbsp;Parthenope was a mermaid who lived in the shores of the&nbsp;Gulf of Naples.&nbsp;One time, a centaur- called&nbsp;Vesuvio– met the young memaid. So,&nbsp;the god of love&nbsp;Eros&nbsp;threw a dart and he made the two young men fall in love.&nbsp; Vesuvio e Parthenope&nbsp;were very very happy to share their love. But,&nbsp;Zeus– who loved Parthenope- decided&nbsp;to separate the two loved forever. So, the powerful&nbsp;Zeus&nbsp;turned&nbsp;Vesuvio&nbsp;into a&nbsp;volcano&nbsp;at the edge of the gulf, in this way the mermaid could always see him far away. But,&nbsp;Parthenope&nbsp;didn’t live without her beloved: for this reason, she killed herself.&nbsp;The waves dragged her body to the coast of the island of&nbsp;Megaride&nbsp;and she assumed the shape of a lovely city.

Il mito racconta di un ragazzo, Niccolò o Cola Pesce, metà uomo e metà pesce, che spesso veniva incitato dal re di Napoli a gettarsi in mare nei pressi di Castel dell'Ovo per riportargli cosa nascondessero i suoi abissi. L'uomo-pesce raccontò di aver visto coralli, scheletri e navi sommerse ricche di tesori. Per portare al sovrano le gemme preziose lì conservate, si faceva ingoiare da un pesce e quando arrivava a destinazione gli tagliava il ventre per uscire. Di lui improvvisamente non si seppe più nulla. Semplicemente non riemerse più dall'acqua.

LA LEGGENDA DELL'UOMO-PESCE

The myth tells of a boy, Niccolò or Cola Pesce, half a man and half a fish, who was often urged by the king of Naples to throw himself to the sea near Castel dell'Ovo to bring him back to what his hiding place was hiding. The man-fish said he had seen corals, skeletons and submersible ships rich in treasures. To bring the precious gems stored there to the ruler, he was swallowed by a fish, and when he arrived at his destination he cut his belly to get out. Suddenly he knew nothing about him. Le onde portarono il suo corpo fino al golfo di Napoli, precisamente sull’isolotto di&nbsp;Megaride.&nbsp;Qui, il corpo di Partenope si dissolse, prendendo la forma della città di&nbsp;Napoli: la sua testa è la collina di&nbsp;Capodimonte&nbsp;e&nbsp;la sua coda si posa lungo la collina di&nbsp;Posillipo.

Parthenope&nbsp;was a mermaid who lived&nbsp;among the rocks in the middle of the sea. One day,&nbsp;Ulysses&nbsp;came to the place where the mermaids lived.&nbsp;The myth tells that&nbsp;Partenope&nbsp;tried to seduce the hero with her beautiful singing, but she failed. The memaid Parthenope never accepted the rejection and she killed herself in the sea.&nbsp;The waves carried her body to the gulf of Naples, precisely on the little island of&nbsp;Megaride.&nbsp;Here, Pathenope’s body dissolved,&nbsp;taking shape in the city of&nbsp;Naples: her head is the hill of&nbsp;Capodimonte&nbsp;and her tail lays along the hill of&nbsp;Posillipo.

Matilde Serao, scrittrice napoletana degli inizi del ‘900, descrive la sua versione del mito.&nbsp;Una ragazza greca di nome Partenope si innamorò dell’eroe ateniese&nbsp;Cimone. Purtroppo però, il padre di Partenope l’aveva promessa in sposa ad un altro uomo. Per questo motivo, i due innamorati scapparono dalla Grecia ed approdarono proprio nel golfo di&nbsp;Napoli. In questo modo, Partenope e Cimone poterono vivere il loro amore senza problemi. In seguito, i due ragazzi vennero raggiunti dalle loro famiglie, dando inizio al popolamento della città. Partenope diede alla luce&nbsp;12 figli, diventando la&nbsp;madre&nbsp;del popolo napoletano, a cui tutti si rivolgono. Inoltre, secondo&nbsp;Matilde Serao,&nbsp;Partenope non è mai morta, ma continua a vivere per restare accanto al suo popolo.

Matilde Serao&nbsp;was a Neapolitan writer of 20th Century. She wrote her interpretation of the Partenope’s myth.&nbsp;Parthenope, a Greek girl, was in love with Athenian hero&nbsp;Cimone. Unfortunately,&nbsp;Parthenope’s father proudly married his daughter to another man. For this reason, the 2 lovers ran away from Greece,&nbsp;and they approached right in&nbsp;the Gulf of Naples.&nbsp;In this way,&nbsp;Parthenope&nbsp;and&nbsp;Cimone&nbsp;could live their love without any problems. Then, the 2 lovers&nbsp;were reached by their families, beginning to populate the city.&nbsp;Parthenopegave birth to&nbsp;12 children, becoming the mother of the Neapolitan people, to whom everyone turns. Moreover, according to&nbsp;Matilde Serao, Partenope&nbsp;never died, but she still alive to stay with her people.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Grazie agli scritti dello storico e filosofo napoletano,&nbsp;Benedetto Croce,&nbsp;si è&nbsp; ricostruita questa celebre leggenda. Pare che vi fosse una cella, all'interno del&nbsp;Maschio Angioino, dove venivano crudelmente gettati tutti quei prigionieri che andavano puniti severamente. Una volta messo piede in quella cella tenebrosa non sarebbero mai più stati avvistati, né vivi né morti. Sulla vicenda cominciarono a sollevarsi varie ipotesi, alcune anche particolarmente strambe: il mistero si risolse qualche tempo dopo, con l'avvistamento di un coccodrillo che afferrava con le fauci un prigioniero, poi divorato brutalmente sott'acqua. Sul trasporto del coccodrillo in terra partenopea esistono due versioni ufficiali: la prima vuole che l'alligatore sia stato portato a Napoli dall’Egitto per volere della regina&nbsp;Giovanna II, moglie adultera di Giacomo di Borbone, che provvedeva a sbarazzarsi dei suoi amanti dandoli in pasto alla bestia. Altri raccontano invece che il coccodrillo fu condotto a Napoli dal re Ferrante d’Aragona, che gli diede in pasto numerosi Baroni protagonisti di una congiura ordita ai suoi danni.

According to the legend, this crocodile was brought to Naples from Egypt and, in particular, by the&nbsp;Queen Joanna II&nbsp;who married James of Bourbon. It seems that she made eat her lovers to the crocodile so that her husband could not discover them.
