This is Harriet Tubman.&nbsp; She was a brave and bold woman.&nbsp; Harriet was born into slavery with 8 siblings, and she became a servant rented out by her owner when she was 5. When she was around 30 years old, she escaped slavery a secret organization called the Underground Railroad. She came to Ontario, Canada. Later on she returned to where she came from as the railroad conductor, to free some of her siblings and other slaves in need of help.

August 26, 1918

This is Katherine Johnson.&nbsp; She was a brilliant mathematician.&nbsp; Katherine was a mathematician starting at the age of 5. She was so smart that she attended college at 13. Without her calculation, the first NASA manned space rocket wouldn’t have been launched successfully. The astronaut Glenn personally asked Katherine to confirm the numbers before taking off, because she was the best mathematician in the program at the time.

This is Mary Jackson. She was a generous woman. Mary’s intelligence made her the first black female engineer at NASA. Before that, she had to get special permission from the city to join her white classmates to promote her from mathematician to engineer. Later on she chose to become Langley’s Women’s Program manager, where she hired and found lots of NASA’s female engineers and mathematicians who work there now.

This is Maya Angelou. She was an important woman. Maya wrote lots of poems throughout her life. These poems explored the inequalities different groups of people faced. Everyone was very moved by her powerful words. Her writing is still appreciated today. She has left a big impact on society!

This is Charlotte Hawkins Brown. She was a very kind woman.&nbsp; Young Charlotte was a very good student. Once she graduated, she started a school that was focused on becoming a safe space for African American students. She raised all the money for buildings and supplies herself. Lots of students came to the school to learn, and lots of them eventually became teachers. Her school was called the Palmer Institute.

What did these amazing women have in common? They all made huge differences in the world, even when people told them they couldn’t. Whether in fields of science, art, math, or any other subject, you too can make a difference!&nbsp;

This is Coretta Scott King. She was a determined woman. Through Coretta’s whole life, she fought for civil rights. She wanted everyone to have equal rights in a time where many people did not have the same basic rights. Her husband was Martin Luther King Jr., who is more well known, but after Martin died, Coretta continued her battle. She went on to create the King Centre, a centre for social justice, and publish several books.

January 7, 1919

This is Dorothy Lavinia Brown. She was a intelligent woman. Dorothy grew up in an orphanage and finished high school at the top of her class. Her dream of becoming a doctor pushed her through the people who didn’t like the idea of black female doctors working in hospitals doing surgery. She became the first African-American surgeon in the south of the United States.
