Animals in French: As-tu un animal?

Now that we have all the language building blocks.. here are some examples of phrases you can use to describe your family.

Notice that Je m'appelle.. becomes il/elle s'appelle...

Ma mère s'appelle Lisa. Elle a les yeuxs marron

Mon frère a 20 ans. il habite à Glasgow.

Ma soeur a 12 ans. Elle est très sportive. Elle a les yeux bleus.

Mon frère porte un jean et un T-shirt bleu.

Mon père est très grand. Il a les cheveux bruns. Il est intelligent.

Mon frère aime le badminton et il joue au football.

Ma mère est assez petite. Elle a les cheveux bouclés. Elle est un peu timide.

You can see that the usual rules apply of changing the ending depending on whether it's a boy or a girl. Sometimes you can't hear a difference in how the endings are pronounced.

Personal descriptions

Remember it isn't important to know all the vocabulary- That's what dictionaries are for! What matters is being able to make a sentence.

je porte- I wear/ I am wearing Il/elle porte- he/she wears-he/she is wearing

une jupe- a skirt une robe- a dress un pantalon- trousers un jean- jeans des baskets- trainers

Notice that trousers and jeans are singular in French. Des means some and this is the article used with plural items of clothing in French- shoes, socks, glasses...

As colours are adjectives they need to agree with the noun they are describing. Masculine or feminine?- So un pantalon vert but une robe verte. Notice some colours don't change! and remember if it's something plural don't forget to write the s! -des baskets rouges but at the same time remember you don't pronunce it!!

Let's now use the verb être to talk about height.

Je suis il/elle est

petit/e- small très petit/e- very small assez petit/e- quite small de taille moyenne- average height assez grand/e- quite tall très grand/e- very tall grand/e- tall

Quelle taille es-tu? What height/size are you?

Here you can see the adjectives have to agree with the person. If you are female then petit and grand has an e at the end. Taille moyenne doesn't change.

To describe ourselves and others we need to combine the appropriate pronoun, verb,noun and adjective. Let's try and simplify this linguistic jigsaw.

Notice in English, hair is singular but in French it is plural. So it literally means my hairs- it must have been decided that it is lots of individual hairs rather than one thing!

De quelle couleur sont tes cheveux/yeux? What colour is your hair/are your eyes?

Remember in French that the noun generally comes before the adjective- J'ai les cheveux bruns- I have brown hair. J'ai les yeux bleus- I have blue eyes..

Les cheveux: bruns - dark brown blonds- blonde châtain- light/medium brown roux - red longs- long courts- short raides- straight bouclés- curly

Les yeux: bleus- blue marron- brown verts- green gris- grey

Adjectives have to agree with the noun in French.  Eyes and hair are plural so the adjectives which describe them are too.

Let's remind ourselves of the importance of being and having when talking about ourselves and others.

Notice in the song- on a- the French use this as an informal way of saying we.
