Margherita Hack è stata una delle menti più brillanti della comunità scientifica italiana contemporanea. Il 12 giugno 1922 Margherita Hack nacque a Firenze; nel capoluogo fiorentino frequentò il liceo, senza avere la possibilità di sostenere l’esame di maturità a causa dello scoppio della Seconda guerra mondiale. Durante l’adolescenza la Hack fu un’eccellente atleta, frequentò la facoltà di fisica, laureandosi con una tesi di astrofisica sulle Cefeidi (una classe di stelle che diventano più o meno brillanti). La libertà di iscriversi alla facoltà di fisica le era stata data dagli stessi genitori: “Fai ciò per cui ti senti più portata”. Non si conosceva nulla dell'evoluzione di stelle e galassie. E si usavano le lastre fotografiche».Il lavoro venne condotto presso l’Osservatorio astronomico di Arcetri, luogo,presso il quale iniziò a occuparsi di spettroscopia stellare, destinata a diventare il suo principale campo di ricerca. Nel 1944 sposò Aldo De Rosa, conosciuto da giovane in un parco di Firenze: i due furono marito e moglie per oltre settant’anni.
Margherita Hack has been one of the brightest minds in the contemporary Italian scientific community. On 12 June 1922 Margherita Hack was born in Florence; in the Florentine capital sattended high school, without having the opportunity to take the examination of maturity due to the outbreak of the Second World War. During her adolescence Hack was an excellent athlete, she attended the faculty of physics, graduating with a thesis on astrophysics on Cepheids (a class of stars that become more or less bright). The freedom to enroll in the faculty of physics was given to her by the same parents: "Do what you feel most likely to be". Nothing was known of the evolution of stars and galaxies. And the photographic plates were used. The work was conducted at the Arcetri Astronomical Observatory, the place where she began to deal with stellar spectroscopy, destined to become her main research field. In 1944 she married Aldo De Rosa, known as a young man in a park in Florence: the two were husband and wife for over seventy years.
Margerita Hack nel 1964 andò a Trieste , dove iniziò a lavorare alla radioastronomia ,lo studio delle stelle nella gamma delle onde radio. Iniziò a collaborare con le università straniere in qualità di ricercatore in visita.
Enorme fu lo sviluppo all’Università di Trieste dove diede vita nel 1980ad un “istituto di Astronomia”, diventando cosi la prima donna in Italia a dirigere un osservatorio astronomico.
Durante questo periodo ha reso questo piccolo Istituto in un Istituto per le ricerche astronomiche internazionali.
Intraprese la carriera di divulgatrice scientifica diventata la sua più importante attività.
Nel 1978 ha fondato la rivista bimensile sulla astronomia.
Margherita Hack è morta il 29 giugno 2013 a Trieste dopo una settimana di ricovero in ospedale, il suo ricovero fu tenuto in segreto. Sepolta nel cimitero di Trieste. Per rispettare le sue volontà, non furono resi pubblici ne il giorno ne l’ora della sepoltura.

Il suo enorme contributo all’intera comunità va preso in considerazione attraverso una duplice chiave di lettura: da un lato, lo studio e la ricerca in ambito scientifico, dall’altro la capacità e la volontà di divulgare le sue conoscenze ad un pubblico che fosse il più vasto possibile. La Hack è stata una donna carismatica che ha avuto successo nella vita e nella propria carriera.
Questi sono i due ambiti di studio e ricerca scientifica su cui si è focalizzata Margherita Hack nel corso della sua esistenza.
