Its various dimensions involve the anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of the sexual response system; identity, orientation, roles, and personality; and thoughts, feelings, and relationships. Sexuality is influenced by ethical, spiritual, cultural, and moral concerns.”

Writing meds for kids??? Whats that all about?

The knowledge of oneself as being male or female. It is believed to evolve from a combination of genetic, prenatal and postnatal endocrine influences, and postnatal psychosocial and environmental experiences (Burns et al., 2017).

The outward expression of maleness or femaleness; it usually relates to anatomic sex, but not always, such as with transgender patients. This process begins at preschool age and continues into adulthood. It is characterized by the emergence of behaviors, attitudes, and feelings that are labeled as male, female, or neutral (Burns et al., 2017).

This occurs at birth based on genital appearance and is the keystone in many societies for future gender socialization (i.e., gender identity). In most cases, genital appearance is determined from conception and is based on the 46XX and 46XY chromosome karyotypes.

(“Whom do I love?”) This refers to an individual's feelings of sexual attraction and erotic potential. Meininger and Remafedi (2008) define sexual orientation as an individual's attraction to the same or opposite sex. Sexual orientation is not dichotomous, and individuals tend to fall along a continuum of sexual expression and desires rather than into exclusive categories. The phrase sexual preference implies choice and should not be used in reference to sexual orientation.

Less than 50% of drugs approved by the FDA in the United States have been specifically tested for use in some subset of the pediatric population (American Academy of Pediatrics [AAP], Committee on Drugs, 2014). This historical lack of drug testing in the pediatric population stems from several factors, which include unprofitability of the pediatric pharmaceutical market (it is relatively small, except for vaccines and some cough/cold medications); difficulty setting up child-friendly environments within which to carry out testing; difficulty taking biologic samples; inability to obtain informed consent from children and adolescents; questionable use of placebo controls in children; possible discomfort, risks, and liability; and difficulty in formulating acceptable medication delivery systems (e.g., tablets, liquids) for specific pediatric age groups (Edmunds and Mayhew, 2013; Thaul, 2012).
