A book can take you where ever you want, places on earth and outside of it.

Maybe a visit to Candy Land, where you can eat as much candy as you want (and no one can tell you otherwise)?

I know you would much rather play outside, watch TV, or play video games than read a book,

In no time, reading will become easier. You will be able to read 50 pages, 100, 500, 1,000,000 pages!

Hi there! Thank you for reading my book! My name is Jordyn Eyton and I am in grade 12 in the PLP program at Seycove Secondary School. This book is actually my latest project, one that focused on persuasive writing in basically any form other than an essay. So, I chose to write a children’s book to persuade my little sister (and/or people her age) to believe that reading can actually be fun, it doesn’t have to be homework. I grew up reading a lot of what I chose to read which was anything from “Ivy and Bean” to the “Percy Jackson” series and I want to share that joy with her. So yes, that is a little bit about me and my book!

You can make friends that you never want to say bye to when the book ends.

I know what you are going to say but hear me out.

I’m sure you pretend to read at bedtime when really you are just looking at the pictures…

This is a book for kids who don’t like reading. It’s also a book for kids who like reading. It’s a book for kids who read every day, who rarely read at all, and anything in between. It’s a book for everyone to remind you of the importance of reading for pleasure, reading by choice. This generation of children have many other more interesting things to occupy themselves with (TV, video games, etc) but that doesn’t mean we can let regular, self-selected reading fade into the background. Go to the library, go to a book store and pick the book that YOU want to read and read it. It really does not matter at all what you read (non-fiction, fiction, fantasy, romance, graphic novel, you name it). It only matters that you do as this is what will develop writing skills, reading skills, comprehension, creativity and academic success across subject areas. Reading is a “super activity”: it’s challenging, it cultivates focus and independence, translates directly to growth as a student at school but most of all… it is fun.

I would like to dedicate this book to my little sister, Sloan, who, in fact, does not hate reading but who I thought would like to hear that she can choose to read whatever her heart desires. Keep reading Sloaney!

Maybe you will even begin to see that reading can be fun if you find the right book.

Writing will become easier as you learn new sounds, words, and sentences.

The ruler of a kingdom who lives in a big, fancy castle and makes whatever rules they want?

Ok, maybe not 1,000,000, but you get the idea.

How about the moon? Do you think there are aliens out there?

A book can let you be anyone you want! How about a super hero?

And read it. Maybe you won’t hate it. Maybe you will actually like it.

I bet you would rather stare at your book than actually read it during silent reading.

Now let me tell you a secret ok? Reading books might even make school easier.

A warm, sunny beach in Mexico, building sun castles and basking in the sun?

So go to the bookstore or the library and choose a book that YOU want to read…

Think about a place you have always wanted to go and I’m sure there’s a book about it!
