Characteristics

Its body length is 120 cm, reaching a wingspan of 300 cm and a weight of about 12 kg. Its beak is white-cream at the tip and black at the base. It has gray legs and a yellowish-brown iris.

The female is similar to the male, but smaller and without a crest or caruncle on the head. The iris is red.

Characteristics

The male has a bare, reddish neck and head. Its collar is showy white at the base of the neck, the rest of its body being black.

The juvenile condor is dark brown, without crest or white on the wings.

Habitat

The Andes Mountains of South America, with altitudes of up to 5,500 m are inhabited by the Andean condor.
Wide-open spaces are preferred by this species to detect food.

Small caves or cliffs are chosen by the condors to rest and make their nests.

Feeding

Its short beak is designed to tear decaying meat (which is softer than fresh meat), so it can hardly hunt large animals as commonly believed.

The condor is an almost exclusively scavenger, feeding on feeds on all kinds of large, dead animals, size.

Causes of its extinction

The expansion of the agricultural frontier into high Andean forests and paramos

Large wild mammals have disappeared. So, it means that condors don't have enough food.

The Condors were persecuted by hunters and this means the reduction of the species.
