The Rocky Mountains, and how they have shaped the west
The 5 themes of geography are a way of thinking about geography, and are used to help organize and analyze information, as well as to provide a framework or lens through which one can try and understand the geography of a place.
To the left is a graphic representing each of the 5 themes, which will be explained more fully in the following pages

The theme of Location refers to the location of a place, either relative or absolute. An absolute location is described by longitude and latitude, for example, in the panel above, there is a bubble with the absolute location of an area in Banff. Relative location is the location of something relative to something else, for example, lake minnewanka is around 8 km northeast of Banff, which is around 128 km west of Calgary
The theme of Reigons refers to areas that are defined by a characteristic they share, a region can be A functional region, which is a region that defined by a function of the area, like the range of a transit system. A formal region, which is defined by a specified set boundary, an example of which could be British Columbia, or the Columbia icefield, shown in the photo. Or a vernacular reigon, which is an area based on peoples perception of it, these are very loose and subjective, but an example could be “the west”
The theme of place refers to the characteristics of a place, some examples of this could be the climate of the place, what sort of plants and animals live there, resources or natural landforms like lakes, mountains, rivers, and like in the photo above, hot springs. The characteristics of a place dont need to be natural either, styles of architecture, buildings, common languages and religions, governments, and all sorts of other things can also be characteristics of a place
The theme of Human enviroment interaction refers to the relationships and interaction between humans and the environment. It is generally based on three concepts, Dependency, which is how humans depend on the environment, Adaptation, or how they adapt to it, and Modification, how humans modify the environment. The photo above shows modification of the environment, as the forest was subject to a “controlled” burn in the 80s that introduced more biodiversity, as can been seen through the yellow leaves, belonging to quaking alders
The theme of movement refers to the movement of resources, people, and ideas from one location to another, and how that is accomplished.
Some examples of means of movement could be boats, through bodies of water, trains and automobiles across land and planes through the sky, some ways of moving things are less obvious than others, for example, speaking can move ideas, so can the written word, even if it itself isn’t moving, because people move, and they can carry things with them as well.
The photo above is of the last spike monument in Craigellachie, BC, which symbolizes the completion of the Canadian pacific railway, allowing for swift movement across the country.
