In this frame from an online lesson, Artist Barbara Mason creates a raised surface of "found" objects to create a 3D collage. The collage will be wrapped with a piece of aluminum foil folded around the raised items. The foil will reveal the shapes below to create a raised surface.
In this frame from an online lesson, Artist Barbara Mason shows you the raised surface of a piece of aluminum foil created by a design built up on a piece of cardboard or tagboard below. Once the items have been added to the surface using tape or glue, the foil is wrapped around the artwork.
In these frames from an online lesson, Artist Barbara Mason shows you two ways to apply water-soluble colors to a piece of aluminum foil folded around a raised surface. The rolling device for applying printing ink is called a brayer. The resulting artwork prints the colors from the surface onto damp paper that receives colors from the foil.
Once the water soluble colors are applied to the surface, the foil wrapped art is placed face up the printing surface, and damp piece of paper is carefully laid on top. The artwork as the raised art releases the colors on the damp paper using a rolling pin. A felt blanket and piece of wax paper provides a cushion between the rolling pin and the art.
In this frame from the lesson, Barbara Mason reveals one of the examples in the lesson as the final artwork emerges from the pressure from the rolling pin. The colors release from the surface of the foil, which holds the colors until they are pressed into the damp paper below. The ways the colors appear are always a little random. After all, it is your art!
