First ask Ms. Ashley, "Can I pet Derby," before you pet Derby. Wait until she says "yes." If you do not want to pet Derby that is okay. If you are scared or nervous or have an allergy to dogs, Ms. Ashley and Derby will not come to you.

If you ask to pet Derby and Ms. Ashley says, "no" this is because Derby is taking a break or because he and Ms. Ashley are in a hurry to get somewhere. If you approach Derby and he walks away this is because he wants some space. This doesn't mean that Derby doesn't like you! Derby is a dog and sometimes he wants more space or he wants to go smell things. If Derby walks away from you, you can tell him, "see you later."

Here are some places you will see Derby and Ms. Ashley: - Walking inside the school - In room A-8 with Ms. Ashley - Visiting a classroom - Visiting kids on the playground Derby takes breaks so that he doesn't get too tired. Derby takes breaks in Ms. Ashley's room or outside.

1. Approach: Walk up slowly and calmly, use an inside voice. 2. Ask: Ask Ms. Ashley to pet Derby and wait until she says ok. 3. Pet: Let Derby see or smell your hand, pet Derby gently on the head or back. Please do not hug him. 4. Goodbye: Pet Derby for no longer than 1 minute, then say goodbye.

Derby is a Therapy Dog. A Therapy Dog is a special dog that is friendly, calm, and gentle. Derby passed a special test to be a Therapy Dog. Derby has special permission to come to Edgewater Elementary.

When Derby is at school he is working. He is always with Ms. Ashley because she is his handler. A handler is someone who is responsible for a therapy dog. These are some of Derby's jobs when he is working: - Helping people feel calm - Helping people feel relaxed - Showing us how to listen, wait your turn, and be kind

Derby wears a leash when he is working. This helps keep him safe. Please help keep Derby safe by not feeding him. Also please be calm and have a safe body when you are around Derby. Use a calm voice and do not yell at him.

At school we are safe and respectful. We also need to be safe and respectful of Derby. Remember these four steps to be safe and respectful of Derby.

Si pide acariciar a Derby y la Sra. Ashley dice "no", es porque Derby está tomando un descanso o porque él y la Sra. Ashley tienen prisa por llegar a alguna parte. If you have any questions about Derby, your class can spend the next 5 minutes or so asking questions. Please have your teacher write down no more than 5 questions and send them to Ms. Ashley in an email. Ms. Ashley and Derby will make sure your questions get answered. Thank you!
