A Disruption is something that alters normality. It can be beneficial, destructive, or both.

I was most looking forward to seeing the USS Midway (above) this trip.

I was really interested in the military and the USS Midway is a really interesting tool of war used by the American Armed Forces.

This field school is all about developments of human technology, usually for the better, which is the very definition of disruption.

We started our day at 4:30 am at the Spirit of Haida Gwaii statue in Vancouver Airport. From there, we took our first flight to Seattle then a second to San Diego.

Our first stop was lunch at Hodads. After we fuelled up on burgers and chicken strips, we made our way to the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve where we learned about the endangered Torrey pine tree while going for a small walk through the pines. Afterwards, we saw La Jolla Cove and Coronado Beach, then went to dinner at Miguel’s Covina. We arrived to our hotel and went to bed to prepare for our next day.

Me And Chicken Strips
By Robbie Wharton

Me and chicken have an understanding,
I don’t like them and they don’t like me,
But their protein keeps me going,
So they’re alright by me.

We began day two with the most important meal of the day: breakfast. This was at 7:30 in the hotel’s self-serve kitchen. I ate a lovely breakfast of waffles and fruit washed down with a nice strong cup of black coffee. We then made our way to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The drive was really nice with really pleasing farmland views. When we arrived at the zoo, we entered through a giant entry gate which led to the main visitor village area of the park. This is where we met our tour guide who took us though parts of the park while explaining the park’s goal: end animal extinction. We then explored the park and recorded our disruption video. While in the park, we saw one of the highlights of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, the daily cheetah run. This is a straight 330-foot-long track enables the cheetahs to run up to 70 miles per hour. This is the only place in the world you can see a cheetah off leash running at top speed. Near the end of the day, we took a ride on the Air Balloon Observation Experience. This is a hot air balloon trip 400 feet above the ground, providing a great view of the 7.3 kilometre square park.
 Air Balloon Observation Experience
The Air Balloon Observation Experience is 400 feet in the air. That’s over 90 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty.

I believe that activities, like the balloon ride, are important for safari parks because they enable visitors to learn how much space is being given to the  animals to ensure they thrive. It also shows that not every part of the park is a display for tourists because so much of the park is employee access only.
