How Have Your Thoughts on Intelligence Changed as a Result of New Understanding?

My thoughts on intelligence have become more open minded to the understanding that it’s not a permanent state. I’ve learned about growth mindset in the past, and relearning it is a great experience to review my own understanding. I’ve become aware of how my mindset and current way of thinking has become harmful to myself. More recently, I’ve managed to develop a fixed mindset in many subjects. I believe that this has helped me in stopping myself from slipping any further down this “slope” of self doubt. Just to keep myself in check, I should probably review the concept of growth mindset again in the future.

How Have Your Thoughts of Achievement on School Changed as a Result of New Understanding?

Can You Think of a Time Where You Received Fixed Mindset Praise? Or a Time Where You Received Growth Mindset Praise?

In a school subject, I’ve realized that it’s completely fine that I “take longer” to understand certain things, and that it’s not a representation of my own intelligence. I’ve gotten used to the idea of “perfectionism”, and strived for it, even though it’s not exactly helpful in the terms of actual learning. I’m currently trying to stop myself before I go overboard on the small details that nobody notices anyway and preventing myself from overworking certain project (like not writing a novel instead of a paragraph.) Although it’s a bad habit to strive for perfectionism and believe in a “permanent intelligence”, I can say that I’m trying to grow from it and understand where I went wrong.

I can’t think of a specific moment where I received fixed mindset praise, but I can definitely say that I’ve possibly been affected by it before. Although I don’t think there is much difference in my success in a project (besides the massive burn out afterwards that can leak into the next assignment), but I know I become more nervous of failure. I’ve realized that I get excessively stressed and terrified of failing to the point that it affects my activities outside of that project. It can also affect my satisfaction when I finally finish the project, and it isn’t “perfect” in my standards. Although I may have “succeeded”, it doesn’t feel that way and I often get burned out anyway. I feel that I can definitely grow through growth mindset praise, and that I can improve my work ethics in terms of perfectionism.
