The Bride of the Monster

Hi everyone! We are Liza and Maria. We decided to write a short horror story based on Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein, which is about a monster who ruins the life of its creator, Victor Frankenstein, in revenge. What if Victor had created a female companion for his monster-child? What would have happened? Stay with us reader! We hope you will enjoy it!

The years passed rapidly; I was able to see again my father, marry Elizabeth, create my own family and live an happy and normal life. I thought I could finally forget about the mistakes that I made in the past, but I was wrong. Some years later, Henry told me that in a village near Geneva a terrible and enormous creature had tried to attack some citizens, but soon the police had come to capture him, binding him like a runaway animal. For a moment I was shocked and worried at the same time; why had he broken his promise? I had created another creature for him, so as to make him happy. I had wasted some precious time of my life just to make his wish come true. Had people found out about their existence? Or what if his companion had died due to people? And if the monster had managed to excape from the police soon, would he be able to hurt me and my family? I couldn't believe it.

When she saw me for the first time ever, she started to walk towards me, his creator, with slow and heavy steps, uttering an incomprehensible lament, but suddenly, the monster held the body of his so-called “bride” to him in the most delicate way possible, with an happiness in the face never seen before, while she tried to wriggle away, not understanding what was happening. “My dear first future companion” said the monster to the creature: “you and I will make a perfect couple together! We will learn how to love and each other, like real humans do, find about new things, explore the world, … we will be happy forever”. At first, the new monster didn’t like the idea, but the fact that someone could care instead of herself changes her mind. 

There was only one choice to get away with that madness: run away and never turn back. So the next day, me, Elizabeth, our three children and my father travelled to New Zeland, to a small village near Wellington. I brought with me some weapons, a knife and a gun, in case he found my hiding place.

Two months later, I saw a slender figure walking towards me. I prepared my gun and I was pointing it towards the figure, but then she screamed and said to me: "Wait! Don't shoot me yet! Let me explain to you what happened!" "You have broken the promise!" I replied full of anger, "Why do I have to listen to you?" "Because I killed my own groom!" she said in tears. Suddenly, I don't know how, but I saw in a creature like her true human emotions, like regret. I dropped the gun and then she began her story.

"After we ran from your apartment, me and my companion decided to live in a forest, hiding our existence from human presence, so we could live a normal and happy life together. I really loved him because he seemed to care a lot for me, even though we barely knew each other. He taught me a lot of things every day and thanks to him now I'm able to speak your language. We lived every day at its fullest, just me and him were enough to forget the bitterness of the world. One day, a bear tried to attack some children near the forest and, luckily, my husband was there to save them. Unfortunately, when the citizens arrived they thought he was the culprit, so they captured him and put him in prison.

Although I wasn't sure I had made the right choice, I decided to go ahead with my experiment of creating a female companion for my monster. Within hours, the sky started to get darker and darker foreshadowing a terrible storm. It was the right time. The machine was ready, the corpse was connected to the wires. Immediately, the lightning came and its electricity travelled to the machine. The monster entered the laboratory, hopeful that he could finally find someone who cared for him. After a few hours, the body of the woman began to shake and slowly she stood up.

She was really skinny with small thin arms and legs. Her face was pale like a corpse would be, while her hair was long, straight and black with some white strands here and there around her visage, probably caused by the electricity. The most frightening thing about that creature was her piercing dark yellow eyes, bright as candles in the dark of night.

Few days later, the two lovebirds decided to hide in the hut which had been previously my laboratory, far from humans, were the new creature tried to speak for the first time ever and learned how to live, while I was planning my return to Geneva, to finally see my father and marry Elizabeth, my dear love.There was a calm and quiet atmosphere in those days, until the night before my departure the two monsters came to the apartment were I was staying. “What do you want from me now?” I said. “We just wanted to thank you for your gratitude; thanks to you, me and my bride will live a joyful life together!” "I'm so delighted that you are happy, but before going away, you creatures have to promise me that from now on you will stop following and searching me forever; you will never come near my new and old family ever again; besides, don’t let the human world find out about your existence. If one of you breaks these promises, I would kill you with my own hands”. They accepted and soon disappeared like shadows in the dark night.

After a few days, he escaped and we were able to meet again. He promised me that if we managed to run away to another place, we could build a more hopeful life than before, regardless of what difficulty we would find in our path. But just on the night of our escape, a crowd of people come for us and kill us. We run as fast as we could until we reached an old bridge over a cliff, which collapsed into pieces as we were walking across it. I tried to grab my beloved's hand to keep him from falling into the void. But my hands were too weak for his body, so he disappeared in the darkness. I managed to escape from the people, but then I realized that I would never see again the gentle smile of my dear lover.

I only came to you to thank you for bringing him and me to life. Thank you for letting him meet someone identical to me. I will not bother you again, I promise. I only wish you and your family a good life. Goodbye, my creator." After prounouncing her last words, she vanished from my sight like mist. Now I don't know if she is still alive, hiding in a forbidden place or in the arms of her lover. I'm only sure about this: I will never see her again.
