Arata Kiyoshi is a high schooler in modern-day Japan. He is a total shut-in and only leaves his home for school or to get new books. His uncle owns the local book store near his school and that is Arata's safe haven. Arata dislikes all things magical and can't stand fantasy novels. He cut ties to the outside world when his parents died in a car accident 3 years ago.
Elsewhere (In an alternate universe) Hatake and his twin sister Ichigo are left a letter by their parents. Knowing their parents, they were worried about what was in the letter. It told them to go find them at the ends of the world (Kakuzo Forest), with the letter is a map that has a big red X.
While heading home, Arata finds a notebook on the ground. He thinks nothing of it and leaves it be. The next day he visits his uncle's library and finds the same notebook lying next to his favorite book. He asks, "Hey uncle Lux, when did this book arrive here." "To be honest, I didn't see it in last week's shipping," he says just as confused as Arata is. As much as he is confused, Arata just grabs another book and again thinks nothing of it. When he gets home, he finds the same book in the mail. He decides to look into it. As he opens the book, a bright light shimmers into his eyes. The next thing he knows, he is looking at a blue sun and flying fish in the air.
