The Civil War was a complicated conflict fought for many reasons.

Many Northerners, including President Abraham Lincoln, believed slavery should be abolished on moral grounds.
While Lincoln could not legally end slavery in the United States; he could, as a war measure, eliminate slavery in the South to weaken the Confederacy.
Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, freeing enslaved people in the rebelling states.

However, word spread slowly and enforcement was often dependent on Union military forces being present.
