Juneteenth was declared a Pennsylvania state holiday by Governor Tom Wolf in 2019.

Slavery was not officially abolished throughout the entire nation until the 13th Amendment was ratified on December 18,1865.

Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day and Freedom Day, is a holiday commemorating the freedom of enslaved people in the United States.

It got its name from the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were informed they were free, on June 19, 1865.

The anniversary of that day has become the Juneteenth holiday. 

Freed people celebrated by wearing their finest clothing and gathering in public - things they were not allowed to do while enslaved.

General Lee’s surrender to General Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia hastened the end of the war. Peace was officially declared on May 9, 1865.

However, due to a lack of communication and in some cases, repression of the information by Southern slave holders, many enslaved people were unaware they had been freed.

The Civil War was a complicated conflict fought for many reasons. Many Northerners, including President Abraham Lincoln, believed slavery should be abolished on moral grounds.

Strawberry soda is a traditional drink served on Juneteenth.

Today it is celebrated with music, dancing, parades and cookouts.

While Lincoln could not legally end slavery in the United States; he could, as a war measure, eliminate slavery in the South to weaken the Confederacy.

Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, freeing enslaved people in the rebelling states. However, word spread slowly and enforcement was often dependent on Union military forces being present.

Arriving in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger declared that the institution of slavery was dead and that enslaved people were now free.
