Originally from Turkey, it was adopted by the Swedish during the 18th century by King Charles XII.
Now most Americans know them as the "Swedish Meatballs" that are served at Ikea.

The Non-Traditional Way of serving Köttbullar is to include the gravy on top of the meatballs.
If you want to eat the Köttbullar the Traditional Way, do not serve the meatballs with gravy! Instead, optionally substitute the gravy with lingonberry jam, include mashed (or plain) potatoes, and finally make sure to have some plain or stewed macaroni on the side!
