Hatfield Marine Science Center Speedy Science

The criteria to for a scientific method goes in this order: observation, questions, research, hypothesis, experiment, data, conclusion, present. Although you have gone through all of the steps, and have finished, you repeat the process a couple more times before finishing the experiment. Our experiment was racing to crabs that differed in some way. We chose to race male vs female crabs in our experiment and see which gender was faster and determined to win. Our hypothesis was that the average female race time would be faster than the male crab. After completing the experiment we found that females ended up to be much faster than the males when they were racing side to side.                                                                                                                                     

This is a drawing of one of the yurts that we stayed in. Each yurt fit five people with one bunk bed and a posh futon. The yurts were always cozy and comfortable and I will definitely miss this sleeping experience.

Hatfield Marine Science Center Visitors Center

	I think that there is a tsunami machine in the Hatfield Marine Science Centre Visitors Centre because of its significance to the area. Due to the fact that Hatfield is in the danger zone of a tsunami, it is important to show the affects that one may have on infrastructure on the coast. The tsunami machine also has a diagram on it that shows the costs of certain materials compared to others. The Oregon coast is the most open to the ocean since the closest land mass is Japan.

Hatfield Marine Science Center Assemble a Whale

Throughout the process of assembling the toothed whale, our class faced a few problems while trying to make sure the invertebrate and ribs are aligned properly. We first started the process with organizing the invertebrates: biggest spinal cord hole at the top and smallest spinal cord hole at the bottom of the table. Once the invertebrates were set in place, it was time to gather and lay down the ribs and shoulder blades. Our first try was unsuccessful so we viewed a previously put together whale for inspiration. We found out that the shorter and more chunky ribs lay more towards the bottom of the whale and that the longer and thinner ribs reside more towards the front of the whale. The final step was to place the breast bones in the correct spot. Once again we used the assembled whale for inspiration to complete our whale. Overall, I thought that our class communicated to complete the “assemble a whale” activity exceedingly well, with great teamwork the entire time.

Cannon Beach is most well known for Haystack Rock. It is called the 2nd largest intertidal rock in the world.

This is a star fish that would be seen on Cannon Beach.

Tillamook Cheese Factory and Izzy’s Buffet

	 The Tillamook Cheese Factory was founded and originated in this area because of Oregon’s wet climate and extensive farming. Due to the fact that there is a lot of rain all year round, the grass is usually always moist and abundant. This gives the cows food almost all year round making it more easy to farm in this area. Another reason that the Tillamook Cheese Factory was based here was because of the extensive farm land. Being one of the first establishments in this area, dating back to 1854, it makes for plenty of room for the cows to roam.

	The Northwest Trek Wildlife Park is a sanctuary for animals in the Pacific Northwest. It is similar to a zoo in the fact that there are inclosed areas for the wildlife. Although, instead of cages or pens the habitats are fenced off spaces of land that are protected from the outside environment. The park offers a tram tour which is often compared to a safari of the animals from the Pacific Northwest. The land was originally bought by a man in the 30’s as a place to live. His descendant’s house is still mounted in the centre of the reserve, living in unison with the wildlife. I think that Northwest Trek Wildlife Park is important because it provides a safe haven for animals that would be hunted otherwise. I also think it is a great way to spread awareness of endangered species and to learn a bit about them in the process.

Columbia River Maritime Museum First Nations Section

	The First Nations had a huge impact on the colonists in this area. One example of this is the Chinook people. The Chinookan people had inhabited the lower Columbia’s region for thousands of years before the settlers came. They had a very strong culture that included their use of red cedar. They used cedar bark for almost all of their tribes daily needs including canoes, clothing, housing, and fishing nets. Today, the traditions of earliest inhabitants are being re-born by their descendants.

I chose the flaming beef to draw because I thought that it was the most memorable meal of the night. 

This bridge is seven kilometres long and crosses the Oregon/Washington border. It is also a very scenic drive. The bridge stretches from one side of the Columbia River to the other.

Columbia River Maritime Museum Crossing the Bar Section

	I think that it would be extremely difficult to cross the bar if the weather was extreme. After learning  what it takes to complete the process of crossing the bar, I definitely would not like to cross it single handedly. Although, now knowing that there is a pilot who trained for over ten years to escort you across the bar, I think that it wouldn’t be a bad idea. Another reason why I would cross the bar is that the technology on the boats is much more advanced than the era of all the shipwrecks.

Depoe Bay is known as the smallest navigatable harbor. On March 11, 2011, the port was damaged by a tsunami caused by an earthquake off the coast of Japan.

Hatfield Marine Science Center R.O.V. Challenge

In the R.O.V challenge, I thought our team did an extraordinary job on designing, creating, and testing out our remotely operated vehicle. The first challenge that we faced was the structure. After almost assembling the the craft, we figured out that our body of the vehicle was too narrow to fit in the two motors. We had to problem solve and add more pipes and connectors to make room for the the motors to fit. The next problem we faced was finding a way to attach the floatation devices. Once we accomplished this task, it took awhile to reach neutral buoyancy. We worked extremely well together, problem solving and supporting each other’s ideas. We finally had the chance to see if our R.O.V. worked. After releasing it into a tank, we remotely operated it to pick up as many cutlery as possible. At first, having two groups in one tank made it difficult to maneuver, but with determination, we got the hang of it and were ultimately successful. I thoroughly enjoyed this challenge, and discovered a new found interest in engineering. My favourite part of the project was knowing that we worked together as a group and didn’t give up when we ran into problems, and ultimately created a very successful and unique R.O.V.

	Fort Stevens was a military fort since 1805 from the American Civil War. It is also the only place besides Hawaii that was attacked during the war.	 The fort was said to be a defensive fort only. The underground bunker took eighteen months to construct which seems pretty fast due to the complex design. The fort’s main purpose was to control the traffic going down the Columbia River. Although, during World War II, it was used to defend against the Japanese. I thought it was very interesting how hard it must it had been for the soldiers to prepare the cannons and how much they practiced this procedure.

	I appreciated this photograph because it gives me a good idea of how the people working at this bunker lived and an image of where they survived during the duration of their services.

	The Astoria Column is 125 feet tall and is covered on the outside by a mural that depicts the history of America from 1792-1392.

I believe that places like these are important to smaller towns because they attract tourism which also helps to bring more money to restaurants and other stores in the area. It also attracts customers to hotels and other overnight stops. 

	Although our mission to complete the quest did not end up to be very successful, the journey was quite the adventure.  For this past quest many things had gone wrong but in the end we all realized that our overall teamwork was extraordinary. Throughout the quest we continued to struggle with sticking together. We found that some of our group would like to run to every clue and some of us liked to take our time to walk from clue to clue. As a group we decided that our biggest problem was reading the entire clue or passage before setting off to find the letters. We also found that it is extremely difficult to succeed and skip a step. In this past quest, we did not read the entire clue and we tried to skip a step due to its difficulty. We ended up only discovering one of the letters in the time that we had. I think that our team can improve in some areas but overall I think that our team was strong and that we will come back with a win next time.

	You were not allowed to bring home the cobble stones from this beach because it is a protected area. The cobble stones are all made of magma that was brought over by a volcanoes in Japan. Yaquina is a wild life preserve that is known for the lighthouse. It was made a protected area in 1980.

Hatfield Marine Science Center Animal Adaptations

	There are countless ways of adaption in the natural environment. From changing colour to strengthening bodily functions, animals have adapted since the beginning of time. All animals had adapted to their environment through struggles they may of had. A theory called natural selection is one of the main influences of adaptation. Natural selection explains how only the strongest will survive, making all animals, including humans evolve to adapt to the environment.  We learned about the habitat of muscles, clams and barnacles and how they’ve adapted. We also found out that waves crashing against them and potentially destroying their homes caused them to adapt by forming harder shells and more durable attachments.

Hello! I’m Ryder and this section is dedicated to me. Below I have listed a few interesting facts about myself and my favourite hobbies. . I love love the outdoors/nature 🌲 . I love to be near the ocean and the beach 🏝 . I love to play basketball🏀 . I love to skate 🛹 . I love to snowboard 🏂 . I love to surf 🏄🏼‍♂️ 	One of the things that I am most passionate about is photography. I have always loved the creativity of taking photographs ever since I had access to a camera. On this past trip, I was able to express my love of photography due to the many opportunities to take photos. By the end of trip I ended up taking some extraordinary photographs. The next few pages will be packed with memories and some of my favourite photographs that I took in Oregon.

	I’m exited to visit Cannon Beach because I really enjoy being near the beach and ocean. I’ve also heard that it is extremely beautiful.  I can’t wait to see if there are waves!

	I think that being able to see a Sunflower sea star would be amazing! I’ve always seen and heard about this sea star and it seems to look very alien-like and interesting. I also read that they are the biggest species of star fish. Overall it would be great to see one of these cool creatures.
