Geography
Ireland is an island nation at the West of Europe. It is the continent’s second largest island (after Great Britain). The Republic of Ireland occupies 80 percent of this landmass, while a large chunk of land situated in the north, called Northern Ireland, is part of the United Kingdom.
The Atlantic Ocean is at the West of the Republic of Ireland
The Irish Sea is along the East coast of the Republic of Ireland.
The Celtic Sea is at the South of the Republic of Ireland.
Ireland is called "The Emerald Isle". Can you guess why?
Well... because there are lots of green fields on the island. But about 15,000 years ago, Ireland was completely covered by thick glaciers. That's the reason why there are also large areas of rugged, rocky landscape, too.
The Republic of Ireland's flag is made of three equal-sized rectangles of orange, white, and green . The flag was first used in 1848.
The green color on the flag represents the native people of Ireland (most of whom are Roman Catholic).
The orange color represents the British supporters of William of Orange who settled in Northern Ireland in the 17th century (most of whom are Protestant).
The white in the center of the flag represents peace between these two groups of people.
Cities
The capital city of the Republic of Ireland is Dublin.
In 2016, there were 5.5 million inhabtants in Dublin.
