SDG 16: peace and justice in Slovenian literature: Ivan Cankar: Hlapec Jernej in njegova pravica, 1907

A documentary book with testimonies of 12 children who tell their personal stories and their uprooting from their homelands, as well as their anxiety for a better tomorrow. Five countries are devastated by the war and young children, without a family with only luggage, their dreams and hopes are forced to leave their homelands alone to be saved. The road is long and difficult, hardships, hunger, thirst, fear, anxiety and danger lurk. Feelings of fear and anxiety are reflected in their eyes and capture a message of cry: No more war!

Wiersz „Pokolenie”&nbsp;jest przepięknym studium o życiu. Zaczyna się słowami: Wiatr drzewa spienia. Ziemia dojrzała. Dalsze fragmenty przywołują kolejne etapy życia w przyrodzie: Ziemia owoców pełna po brzegi [...] Kwiaty to krople miodu [...]. Pięknu przyrody przeciwstawione zostaje okrucieństwo i tragizm wojny: [...] Ze świerków na polu zwisa Głowa obcięta, strasząc jak krzyk. [...] Kwiaty to krople miodu – [...] pod tym jak korzeń skręcone ciała, żywcem stłoczone pod ciemny strop. Wiersz ten mówi o tragedii pokolenia , dla których wojna stanowiła przewartościowanie systemu wychowawczego, która stworzyła nowy Dekalog – przykazania okrucieństwa. Wojna zmusiła ich do odrzucenia starego systemu wartości, systemu sprzed wojny. Czytamy: Nas nauczono. Nie ma litości. [...] Nie ma sumienia. [...] Nie ma miłości [...] Nas nauczono. Trzeba zapomnieć. Nowe warunki całkowicie ich zmieniły, zabrały dawne postawy, zostali zmuszeni do porzucenia swych marzeń i tego, co dotąd było dla nich ważne i im bliskie: W grozie drążymy mroczne miłości, Własne posągi – źli troglodyci.

[...] hanging in the field head cut off scaring like a scream. The old world, known before the war, is as fleeting as clouds, and just as they pass away quickly. Clouds - a symbol of past happiness, flow into the darkness - that is, during the war period: And only clouds - fingers or hair Similar - gliding predominantly into the dark.

The poem is much more bitter and pessimistic in expression. He is full of pain and complaint about fate. This is a short story of an entire generation, showing its tragedy, paralysis of war and ruthlessness. The poem contains a terrifying question about the sense of war, uncertainty about tomorrow, a question about conscience.

Któremu kości kijem złamano ale także katastroficzne wizje świata, mroczne i przerażające: [...] na polu zwisa głowa obcięta strasząc jak krzyk. Stary świat, znany sprzed wojny, jest tak ulotny jak chmury, i tak jak one szybko przemija. Chmury – symbol dawnego szczęścia, płynie w mrok – czyli w okres wojennych działań:

I tylko chmury – palcom czy włosom Podobne – suną drapieżnie w mrok. Wiersz&nbsp;jest o wiele bardziej gorzki i pesymistyczny w wyrazie. Jest pełen bólu i skargi na los. To krótka historia całego pokolenia, ukazująca jego tragizm, porażenie wojną i bezwzględnością. Wiersz zawiera przeraźliwe pytanie o sens wojny, niepewność o jutro, pytanie o sumienie

Justice is blind. She is wearing a blindfold so as not to treat friends differently from strangers, or rich people better than the poor ones. &nbsp;

The war made them just troglodytes - primitive people, with primitive instincts and needs, guided only by biological instincts and the desire to survive. It is not advisable to be guided by higher feelings, because it may endanger life, but life in the shape of primitive man also kills - internally, destroying feelings:

We are looking for a heart - we take it in hand, We listen: torture will end But there will be a stone - yes - a stone. War patriotism in many cases involved the necessity of killing, it was necessary to learn the evil of war. War means completely new living conditions, lack of security and support. Hence, it forced the whole generation to pay attention to the surroundings, to hide from enemy attacks: We live in cavities, fear overcome. In the new, warlike approach, one must be guided by instinct, becoming similar to wild animals - as they quickly respond to threats, as they hide underground. War, taking young people's dreams, memory and conscience, gave them not only nightmares: At night I dream about my brother who died Whose eyes were pierced alive, Which bones were broken with a stick but also catastrophic visions of the world, dark and scary:

This poem “The Generation” is a beautiful study of life. It starts with the words: The wind is foaming trees. The land has matured. Further fragments recall successive stages of life in nature: A fruit land full to the brim [...] Flowers are drops of honey [...]. The cruelty and tragedy of the war are contrasted with the beauty of nature: [...] It hangs from spruces in the field Head cut off, scaring like a scream. [...] Flowers are drops of honey - [...] under the root of the twisted body, crammed under the dark ceiling This poem speaks of the tragedy of the generation for whom the&nbsp;war was a re-evaluation of the educational system, which created a new Decalogue - commandments of cruelty. The war forced them to reject the old value system, the pre-war system. We read: We've been taught. There's no mercy. [...] There is no conscience. [...] There is no love [...] We've been taught. You have to forget. The new conditions changed them completely, took away their former attitudes, they were forced to abandon their dreams and what was important to them and close to them: We dart dark love in terror Own statues - bad troglodytes

Wojna uczyniła z nich właśnie troglodytów – czyli ludzi pierwotnych, o prymitywnych instynktach i potrzebach, kierujących się tylko instynktami biologicznymi i chęcią przeżycia. Kierowanie się wyższymi uczuciami nie jest wskazane, bowiem może narażać na utratę życia, ale życie na kształt człowieka pierwotnego także zabija – wewnętrznie, niszcząc uczucia: Szukamy serca – bierzemy w rękę, Nasłuchujemy: wygaśnie męka, Ale zostanie kamień – tak – głaz. Wojenny patriotyzm polegał bowiem w wielu przypadkach na konieczności zabijania, był z koniecznością nauką zła wojny. Wojna to całkowicie nowe warunki życia, brak bezpieczeństwa i oparcia. Stąd wymusiło to na całym pokoleniu zwracanie uwagi na otoczenie, skrywanie się przed atakami wroga: W jamach żyjemy strachem zaryci. W nowym, wojennym sposobie postępowania trzeba kierować się instynktem, stając się podobnym do dzikich zwierząt – tak jak one szybko reagować na zagrożenia, tak jak one ukrywać się pod ziemią.
