SEL is fundamental to the growth of human beings in which it teaches us how to be aware and in control of our emotions. It also helps us along the journey of finding out who we are as individuals and how we want to evolve as life goes on. SEL gives us tools to set and accomplish goals that we have with ourselves and with others, and encourages mindfulness in everything that we do (Casel, 2022).
This model illustrates the casel framework of SEL and how it functions within ourselves and beyond, interconnected with those around us in personal lives and communities (Casel, 2022).
Why do we use it?
We use SEL to improve our own well-beings as well as our interactions with those around us. According to Casel, in order to carry out altruistic relationships with others and thus live an altruistic life, we must first find one with ourselves. Being self aware and emotionally intelligent will lead to having healthier relationships with others in which we can be aware and mindful of their wants and needs as well as our own and build a cooperative trust (Casel, 2021).
In doing so, we can achieve more by being able to work together more efficiently and more often. Casel makes the argument that, “SEL can help address various forms of inequity and empower young people and adults to co-create thriving schools and contribute to safe, healthy, and just communities” (Casel, 2022).
