There are many myths and legends about the Vikings and their beliefs, including Gods and Goddesses and their exploits, some exciting, some scary, some with happy outcomes, some with unhappy outcomes. The animated stories in the 'Viking Saga Songs' bring some of these tales to life. The songs have been composed to enhance aspects of the stories, as we do not have recorded music from the time.

Many composers have been inspired by the dramatic stories and have written musical pieces which represent characters, settings and plots. Instruments, notes and voices are carefully selected and put together to help us imagine trolls, goblins, seas, mountains, storms, Gods and Goddesses and more.

Pitch (how high or low a sound is), Duration (how short or long a sound is), Timbre (sound qualities of different instruments and voices), Structure (how a piece is put together - eg. verses and choruses), Tempo (how fast or slow a sound is), Dynamics (how loud or soft a sound is) and Texture (how many layers of sound there are) are the main building blocks of music and these are shown in different songs and the listening pieces.

The listening pieces in this set of lessons are excerpts from Richard Wagner (1813 - 1883), Jean Sibelius (1865 - 1957), Edvard Grieg (1843 - 1907), Benjamin Britten (1913 - 1976) and Leos Janacek (1854 - 1928).
