Availability
There are many food options in Morningside Heights. The cafes in our community open very early in the morning. People can buy coffee or breakfast on their way to work or school. Most restaurants open in the afternoon to serve lunch and dinner. Many local grocery stores and produce stands are open late at night. We buy nutritious food from produce stands and grocery stores, like fruit, salads, and healthy sandwiches.

Cost
In our community, some foods are expensive, and others are more affordable. Also, some foods are healthy, and some foods are not. One healthy and affordable food option is shopping from local vendors where we buy a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Another store where you can buy food is a Bodega. A bodega is a small, family-owned store that is open many hours each day. Bodegas are known for their colorful appearance and rich history. They have items people use a lot in their house, like paper towels, snacks, cleaning products, and some medicines. We make delicious meals with the food we buy from bodegas! The cost of the food here can be expensive, so a more affordable option is to buy from larger grocery stores.

Accessibility
The grocery stores and restaurants are accessible to people in our community. We can walk, bike, or take the subway to buy food. The subway is an underground train. We can ride it 24 hours a day. Most people in New York do not drive cars to buy food. There is a lot of traffic, and it is difficult to find places to park.

Options
There are many food options in our community. People with many different cultures can find foods that are important to them. People can find fresh ingredients for dishes they cook or go out to eat at restaurants they like. For example, there are food trucks that have Himalayan, Peruvian, and Mexican cuisines.

How might we improve food security for people in this community? Loading...
In this project, we learned that there are many accessible food options in our community. The foods we buy come from different places and cultures. However, many of the options are too expensive for people in our community to buy. One idea to improve food security is to build more community gardens.
This way people can grow food. It is less expensive to grow food than to buy it from a store. Restaurants and grocery stores can donate fresh food they cannot use to food banks. In New York, food banks give food to people who need it for free.
