It has been a real pleasure to see you grow in to such fantastic young adults. I am very proud of your achievements so far and am delighted to hear about your chosen paths, be it a university course or apprenticeship or employment.

Be confident, positive and remember that leaving this school is like leaving a nest and it is time for you to spread your wings, fly and reach soaring heights that you are capable of.

ABSORB POSITIVE ENERGY

Why is it important to have a progressive mind-set and a healthy body? In the coming years, you will be meeting new people, working on new projects, competing at various levels in sports and studies, and all that requires a lot of energy and positivity. You are going to do all of that successfully because you have prepared yourself for those challenges well in advance. You have the energy and the passion- but you also know how to re-charge yourself, and understand the concept of synergy.

Remember to keep an open mind, learn from every experience and never quit. The main point here is to balance effectively between your personal and academic life. At no point, you should be worried because support is always around you- you just have to ask.

All major universities have well-established student support structure.

Your safety and well-being is the top priority during these challenging times. Student support can also link you with their counsellors, who are happy to talk to you about anything that is bothering you. Sometimes it is important to find out how to register with a local doctor, and also know the type of medical attention available on or off university campus.

You might want to start by checking your university website, or speak with someone from student support. You can live on or off the campus. Before signing a contract, find out about the extra bills e.g. paying for electricity, water, internet, TV licence etc. More info is here.

First few weeks can be different. What should you do?

Get out of your room and introduce yourself. Literally everyone feels awkward about it, so ignore the nerves and find friends.

Get chatting. One thing is guaranteed - you’ll know the answers to ‘where are you from?’ and ‘what are you studying?’ off by heart after the first hour, but you can always spice things up a bit with a quick round of ‘Would You Rather…’.

Go exploring! Head out with your flatmates to pick up some shopping (and those little things you inevitably forgot to bring from home - batteries, anyone?) and get your bearings.
