In Honor of Jesse Who Loved Graphic Novels and Created Comic Books

The word cloud above was created using the work of 4th graders Chris Luque and Michal Collins. They asked each third grade student and teacher to give a word to describe Jesse. The larger the word, the more times it was given to describe him. He will be truly missed by his friends and classmates!

Jesse was a very great student at Mount Vernon Exploratory School. All of his teachers were asked a few questions about him and we are sharing them with you and the school. All of us miss Jesse and some of us didn't get to know him.
All of Jesse’s teachers had a lot to say about him. Sharing these stories was a great way to get to know him. Jesse’s memory still lives on in our hearts. We miss Jesse so much! I hope you all know how much he meant to these teachers and our students. Jesse was an amazing person!

“Jesse loved Pokemon’. Every time he worked on the computers, he always wanted to go to YouTube and try to find Pokemon videos. I always had to tell him we can’t get on YouTube at school.”

“Jesse was so funny. he had a great sense of humor and was a loyal friend. My entire class would light up from him. He liked skylanders a lot and amazed his friends with his knowledge. He made everyone want to listen. He brought our class together with his wonderful storytelling abilities. I had many memorable moments but one that stuck out first was when he was showing off his flexibility at field day. He could put his legs completely behind his head. again he was always making us laugh!’’

“ Jesse was one of a kind. He made everyone around him smile. He loved animals, especially dogs. Jesse loved reading funny books, especially “Dog Man” and “Captain Underpants,” and he had the best sense of humor. He always loved to laugh. Jesse was loved dearly by all of his classmates and by all who knew him. He brought out the very best in others. He taught us to love each other, to be better friends, and to accept one another’s differences. Our class loved and protected him. We were our own little family, and he was the center of it. Jesse made all of us better just by knowing him. He made me a better teacher and I will carry him in my heart always.
Our class had so many special moments with Jesse. Probably our favorite was when we would read his favorite book, “Those Darn Squirrels.” The main character, Mr. Fookwire, would shake his fist at the squirrels and say, “Those Darn Squirrels!” and Jesse could imitate him and say it just the way we think Mr. Fookwire would have said it. Everytime we read it, he would do that part for us, and we would all just laugh and laugh. It was our special thing. He kept that book in his bookbox all year long and we all knew that was “Jesse’s book.” After Jesse’s passing, our old class got back together and read that book together in Jesse’s memory. I think he would have been proud.”

Mrs. Gundlach, 2nd Grade Teacher

“Jesse was very unique and loved making comics. He loved to read Dog Man and Captain Underpants. He was a rule follower. He loved to play in the shade at recess and liked to walk while I was reading. Jesse was quiet around his peers and loved to play with Legos during indoor recess. He loved to make Lego creations for his peers. He did not like to make things for himself, but he liked to do things by himself. My most memorable moment with Jesse is when he made his longest comic book and wanted to read it aloud for the class. This was a really big deal, because Jesse did not like to read out loud in front of his classmates - ever. Jesse sat in my teacher chair, read his comic book, and showed the pictures. When he was finished, my class clapped and cheered for Jesse. Jesse didn’t really know how to accept the positive feedback, but the huge smile on his face was worth 1,000 words. He donated his book to our classroom library where it remains."

MVES First Lego League

we won the core values award for gracious professionalism!

This year’s challenge was to find a problem in your community and figure out how you can fix it. Mount Vernon chose to focus on the old Griffin Bro’s Store in Clermont, GA. The problem with the old Griffin Bros building was that is was abandoned, and it was a disaster. Not only that, but the building was only about 4 and a half feet from the road, and that was a challenge. It would cost so much money just to repair this building that has been standing in Clermont for 105 years. Mrs. Riley was one of the head coaches during this years’ competition, and this is what she liked about Robotics this year . "I liked how we worked in groups and encouraged each other". Mrs. Lathem was the second coach of the team. Some of the challenges that the robot had to do were the Crane, Traffic Jam, Swing, Steel Structure, and the Treehouse. These challenges give the team points for the competition. The more points a team has, the better chance they have for advancing to the next competition. An example of what one of the challenges is the ramp. You drive your robot up a ramp, raise two flags, and head back down. Unfortunately, Mount Vernon didn’t make it to the next competition.The school record for the most points during a round was 130 points.

The Boosterthon Fun Run was held on Wednesday, November 20th. It's a great way to raise money for our school while letting the kids have fun and earn prizes.

I can't wait to use the new chromebooks PTO buys from this!
