MENTOR AND DISCIPLE
OCT 2:
WORLD PEACE DAY
In October 2, 1960, at 32 years old, third Soka Gakkai President Daisaku Ikeda left Tokyo for the first time to visit the USA, Canada and Brazil. During those times, the world was in the middle of the Cold War and the tension between the US and the Soviet Union was very high.
In the Soka Gakkai, October 2 is celebrated as World Peace Day. Do you know why? This is because October 2 marks a key milestone in the international development of Nichiren Buddhism, with its goal of contributing to building lasting peace throughout the world.

It was President Ikede's mentor, second Soka Gakkai President Josei Toda, who encouraged President Ikeda to develop a global vision and to travel outside of Japan to build the foundations of a truly international movement, contributing to building peace through the spread of a philosophy that teaches the supreme value and dignity of human life. Having lived through World War II, both President Toda and President Ikeda knew that peace is the most basic starting point for the advancement of humanity.
