Help with Childcare Costs

Childcare Costs can be a barrier to families in accessing childcare.
There are several options to funding that parents can access.

Aberdeen City Council offers 50% discount on fees for those families on eligible benefits
Universal Credit
Tax Free Childcare

Lower Income Households

WHAT CAN PARENTS GET

85% of childcare costs covered for children under 16 (or under 17 and
disabled).
• Maximum per month of:
- £951 for 1 child
- £1630 for 2 or more children

Example: For an after-school session that costs £15, parents can receive £12.75 of that fee back, meaning the session only costs parents £2.25

COSTS

If parents need help towards their upfront childcare costs until they are in
receipt of their first wages, the DWP may assist with:
• Deposit - one off advance payment of childcare
• Retainer – advance payment to secure the nursery provision prior to
starting work of training
• Fees – upfront childcare fees for the first month in advance of the service
being delivered
• Taster or settling in periods to help prepare or settle their child(ren) into
the new childcare environment. Note: This list is not exhaustive

WHAT CAN PARENTS GET

The scheme pays 20% of childcare costs. Example: an after-school
sessions costs £15, parent would pay £12, government would pay £3.

• Tax-free childcare is an additionality (of up to £2,000 per year, per child)
for parents to pay for registered childcare

• Parents and government both pay into a tax-free childcare account
which then pays the service

• Any money left over in the account when childcare is no longer needed
is returned to parent and government

If a child has a disability

TAX-FREE
CHILDCARE

If a child is disabled and usually lives with the parents, they may get up to
£4,000 a year until 1 September after their 16th birthday. They’re eligible
for this if they:
• get Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment, Armed
Forces Independence Payment, Child Disability Payment (Scotland only)
or Adult Disability Payment (Scotland only)
• are certified as blind or severely sight-impaired

Aberdeen City Council
offers a 50% discount for families on eligible discounts

When applying for a place at an Aberdeen City Council School Age Provision, you may be eligible for 50% discount on fees if the parent or child is in receipt of an eligible benefit.
We will require to see proof of benefit when you register your child and this is then requested on a six monthly basis
