In the beginning, when the world was new, all animals would work for humans. However, there was one sad, lonely animal called a Fennec Fox. Most days, he hated living beneath the intense heat of the dusty, dry desert, lacking food and water. If any animal spoke to him he would simply reply with… nothing due to being deaf.

Early one morning, a horse-dark fawn in colour and wearing a lustrous, leather saddle on its back-trotted gracefully over the golden sand “good morning Fox!” said the horse in a deep tone. “come along and trot with us.”

However, there was no reply…

“how rude. Don’t just ignore me!” thought the horse as he galloped off to tell the man.

Moments later, a monkey, that was eating a banana, raced playfully across the dunes. “yo Fox! Y comin to fetch the fresh green leaves off the tallest trees with us?”

However, there was no reply…

Flabbergasted and offended, the monkey rapidly raced off to tell the man about the impolite ignore.

As the day wore on, a strong, wrinkled Hippo, which had the largest teeth anyone has seen, lumbered awkwardly across the sweltering desert. “hello…Fox!” spoke the Hippo in a deep wallowing voice. “Co…me plough the…fieldss with me..!”
However, there was no reply…
With a grunt, the Hippo stomped away sluggishly to tell the man.

At the end of the day, the man called a meeting with all the animals. “I am very sorry but you three animals will have to work double since that ignorant thing won’t obey.” Ordered the man.

Incensed by the man’s decision, the animals called yet another meeting on the edge of the dessert. Monkey was on the verge of rage. To their astonishment, Fox had appeared chewing on small rodents. The fox found the endeavour to make him listen a joke. Surely, everyone knew that fox was deaf.

After the fox had disappeared over the horizon and three days had passed, a Genie-short hair with freckles-appeared in a cloud of dust.
“Master of all deserts!” the horse declared in a sophisticated manner. “Is it fair for anyone to be idle?”
“Certainly no!” snapped the Genie. “why would you ask?”

Beneath a blazing sun, the three animals told their story: how he refused to trot: how he would not fetch leaves; how he declined to plough and how each time he just ignored.

Wrapping himself in a mystical cloak, the Genie vanished in a cloud of stars to search for the Fox. He found the fox admiring himself in a pool of water. “what is this I hear?” questioned the Genie. “Not doing any work? Pa…thetic!” cried the Genie. “you have given all the other animals extra work!”

“I wouldn’t ignore me again fox. I want you to do as you’re told!”

Moments after being ignored, Genie, who had flames building up in his eyes, preformed a trick making fox’s ears grow larger and more swollen.
“there you have it. Your very own large ears to help you hear and dispel heat so you can do long work hours in this sultry heat. Now go out among the others and behave!”
Doing as he was told: fox went to join the others. From that day to this, the fennec fox will always appear with large ears after not being able to hear for those few of days.
