On the first weekend we have kids dog races. Only Hughes people are there during kids dog races. Kids use Hughie’s dogs.

They use two, three, four, or five dogs to race one mile. One person goes around the course on the river at a time. The person with the fastest time wins. The young children also race. They go across the river with one dog.

The community has a cover dish. First, people go around the community and pick up food. Then, everyone goes to the hall. Setsoo Madeline says grace in Denaakk’e. Then we eat in this order: Visitors, Elders, grown ups, and finally kids. After the meal the dog racers draw numbers to see what order they will race the following day.

The next day everyone wakes up early to prepare their dogs and eat breakfast at the hall. Then everyone goes down to the river bank.

The dog racers for the open class 16 mile race prepare for their teams on the river. The dogs arrive in wooden kennels. The mushers put on the harnesses and hook the dogs to the racing sled. The racing sled is held in place by a snow machine.

The spectators cheer for the racers as they take off while standing on the top of the river bank. The track is 16 miles and takes about an hour to complete. When the racers cross the finish line their time is recorded.
