The social impact of science and technology

Imagining a world completely without science and technology is already impossible. This would mean many changes that we don't even realize these two factors influence. It would be impossible to use a coffee pot in the morning, or to go down an elevator, or to make traffic lights work on the roads.

There are scientists researching how to prevent forest fires, how to help animals that suffer because of them, how to reduce the environmental impacts of big companies. There are scientists creating prototypes of equipment that make harvests more efficient and lower the price of products on the market. Science and technology must seek the social good as a whole.

FLOODS

Floods are natural phenomena, but they can be intensified by human practices in city space. In Campos dos Goytacazes the causes are both natural and anthropic. Depending on the volume of rainfall, the larger bed of the Paraíba do Sul River is flooded, causing flooding in its area. The high rate of pollution in the city, caused both by the lack of awareness on the part of the population and by inefficient systems of garbage collection or distribution of garbage cans throughout the city. In addition, there are problems caused by pollution generated by companies and other agencies. This causes the clogging of the culverts, which would be responsible for containing part of the water that raises the level of the river. In addition, the garbage generated is carried away by the torrents and contributes even more to raise the volume of the water. The occurrence of floods in cities can also be related to problems in the drainage systems.

The best way to deal with this problem, in fact, is to carry out proper prevention, which can occur through measures such as these:

Building efficient drainage systems;
Removal of risk areas;
Creating forest reserves on the river banks;
Reduction of pollution indices and garbage generation;
More consistent urban planning.
