Hi! My name is Mrs. Simmons and I am so excited to be your 2nd grade teacher this year!
Here's a few things about me:
I was born in Provo, Utah but grew up in San Angelo, Texas. I didn't make it back to Utah until I graduated from Texas Tech University. I am married and have 4 children and 2 granddaughters. Emily is 8 and Chloe is 4. Being a grandmother is the best thing ever! I love spending as much time as I can with Emily and Chloe. I am so lucky they live close to me!
I enjoy machine embroidering and sewing little girl dresses for my granddaughters.
This is my 19th year teaching 2nd grade and I just love it!
There are so many fun things you can do and learn in 2nd grade. (You will hear more about those things later in this book)
My goal for this year is to create a safe learning environment that promotes goal setting, active participation and student growth. Together, as a class, I know we will have a great year in 2nd grade!
I look forward to meeting all of you on August 22nd!

The school theme for this year is
"Color The World With Kindness".

My goal this year is to create a positive classroom culture to make sure students feel safe in the classroom. I have many positive incentives in place, such as coins, stickers, rewards, prizes, notes, etc.
There will be a Star of the Week in the class each week. I will begin this in September. Watch for the schedule. I will send home a small poster for your child to complete and bring back. It is a great way for me and the other students to get to know each other better.
Individual students will receive kindness cash. For every 5 kindness cash earned, the student will go to the office for a prize and be put in a drawing for a Nintendo Switch party.
In the "Second Step" program there are 4 units that will be taught throughout the course of the school year.

Homework
This year, students are only required to read 20 minutes/day. On Mondays, I will send home a weekly newsletter, a spelling list, and a reading log. The reading log will need to be returned the following Monday. No other homework is required.

Math
2nd grade math is all about place value, and two/three- digit subtraction and addition. It's a lot of fun to use different strategies to add and subtract. We will have many student discussions in math to help stay engaged and active in learning.

Reading/Language Arts
Jordan School District uses many reading programs such as Journeys, Heggerty, HD Reading, and 95%. During the course of the year each student will participate in these programs to help improve their reading skills.
