What Is She Known For
Eunice Kennedy is known for being a founder of an event called the Special Olympics. What is the Special Olympics? The Special Olympics is an event for people with disabilities. She started this event because she saw people discriminating others with disabilities. She believed that if people with disabilities could do what others can do, they could achieve more than imagined. She also stared it because she loved to play sports and her sister had a disability and she wanted to make a change.
Early Life
Eunice Kennedy was born in Massachusetts on July 10, 1921. She was the fifth child of Joseph and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. When she was older she went to Stanford University in California and got a bachelors of science degree. On May 23 ,1953 she married Robert Sargent Shriver. She then took over Joseph p. Kennedy foundation as a memorial for her brother who died in war. She died in August 11, 2009.
Starting To Make Change
In 1962 Eunice Kennedy started a day camp for people in her home town Maryland. She wanted to see what they could do. They did sport and activities and training all year. She did this they can dedicate them self's to accomplish more. That is how the concept of the Special Olympics began.
Awards
Eunice Kennedy has been well known around the world and because of her work she has been awarded. She has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1984 which is the highest honor award an American could get. She has also been awarded honorary degrees from both Yale and Princeton university. She also received the Theodore Roosevelt award in 2002. Those are her awards.
