THE INNOMINATO AND LUCIA

The "Unnamed" decides to meet the girl in person. Lucia prays the noble man to free her,&nbsp;reminding him of the divine forgiveness as compensation for acts of mercy.&nbsp;

The Unnamed goes to Cardinal Borromeo, a holy man, with whom he begins a passionate conversation on why he is tormented by remorse these days. In the end, after the blessing of the bishop he bursts into tears and repens of all the crimes committed.

After Don Rodrigo’s death, Don Abbondio agrees to celebrate the wedding and convinces Don Rodrigo’s heir, who wants to help the newlyweds. After the ceremony, the marquis welcomes the guests in his palace, but he doesn’t join the banquet because of the difference in social class. The newlyweds move to Bergamo, where Renzo buys a tailoring with his cousin Bartolo and they start this new activity together. From this point, renzo and Lucia lives an happy life animated by the birth of many kids. Their firstborn is a girl and she’s called Maria in honour of Virgin Mary.

DON ABBONDIO MEETS THE "BRAVI"

DON ABBONDIO AND RENZO'S MEETING

Don Abbondio is walking quietly along the road when two "bravi", sent by Don Rodrigo, stop him and order him not to celebrate the marriage between Renzo Tramaglino and Lucia Mondella. At first Don Abbondio refuses the request, then afraid, accepts.

Renzo, the morning of the marriage,&nbsp;goes to Don Abbondio but the priest tries to find excuses to postpone the marriage. Renzo gives up but on his way back home, he meets Perpetua, Don Abbondio's housekeeper, and thanks to her, he becomes sospicious about Don Abbondio's strange behaviour. So Renzo comes back to the priest and finds out that Don Rodrigo is the reason why he has to postpone his wedding.

GERTRUDE AND LUCIA

THE NUN OF MONZA

The nun of Monza's story is based on a true story. Gertrude was born in a wealthy family, she was forced by her father to become a nun. She is&nbsp;25 and very beautiful. She is different from the other nuns in the way of dressing because she has got long hair and the tunic is tighter than that of the others.

Lucia and Agnese, accompanied by a monk, one of Friar Cristoforo's friend, arrive at the Monastery of Monza. The prioress welcomes them; this woman is described by the author in details. The two women, frightened by the authoritative presence of the nun and looking for a shelter, try to answer to the nosy questions of the young nun, who has a strong interest for Lucia's story.

Meanwhile the plague, a contagious disease, breaks out in Milan because of the lansquenetes, an army of mercenaries. But there are some people who are immune from this, they are the “Monatti”, who have to carry the bodies of the dead to the cemetery. In this macabre atmosephere we find a glimmer of light in a loving mother of a dead child whose name is Cecilia.

One day Don Rodrigo arrives home and begins to feel sick. After a bad night, he wakes up and realizes he has taken the plague. He calls one of his men, the "Griso", who instead of calling the doctors goes to call the monatti. Renzo and Fra Cristoforo find him in a hut ravaged by the plague. While Don Rodrigo is dying, the two pray for him and they go away.

DON RODRIGO

DON ABBONDIO

Don Abbondio is the curate of the country. He wasn't born with a lion's heart, in fact he is easily intimidated by "bravi" and he is a coward. He has to celebrate Renzo and Lucia's wedding.

Don Rodrigo is a wealthy landlord and leads a life as a criminal. He is surrounded by a multitude of "bravi", criminal men, who help him to accomplish his misdeeds.&nbsp; He is the antagonist of the novel and opposes the marriage between Lucia and Renzo.

That branch of the lake of Como , which extends towards the south, is enclosed by two unbroken chains of mountains...

DEPARTURE AND SEPARATION

Tonio and Gervaso, the two witnesses of the marriage, go to Don Abbondio with the excuse of having some money for him and Renzo and Lucia join them to force the priest to marry them. Renzo and Lucia hide behind Tonio and Gervaso because Don Abbondio doesn't know anything about their plan for the wedding, in fact the marriage is defined "a surprise". But at the end they don't succeed to get married by the priest.

After that, the two lovers and Agnese, Lucia's mother, are forced to run away because of the opposition to their marriage, and they manage to leave the town thanks to Friar Cristoforo, the spiritual guide of Lucia, who organises their escape by crossing the Como lake by boat. Lucia sadly says goodbye to her town.

RENZO IN MILAN

THE KIDNAPPING

Meanwhile, Renzo arrives in Milan. He goes to friar Bonaventura’s convent, but he doesn’t find him there, so he decides to take a walk in the city. Suddenly Renzo sees that there’s a fight going on and he gets involved in it. He is arrested because of that but he’s able to escape thanks to the rioters.

Don Rodrigo asks the "Unnamed" help for kidnapping of Lucia. The "Unnamed" accepts and asks the Nibbio, a villain, to involve Egidio, the nun's lover, in order to convince Gertrude to help them.&nbsp; On the appointed day Gertrude sends Lucia to the village,

and the latter is kidnapped by the bravi and taken by a carriage to the castle, where the "Unnamed" asks an old woman to give courage to Lucia.

Renzo is one of the main characters. He’s Lucia’s future husband, whose marriage is destroyed by Don Rodrigo. His real name is Lorenzo, he’s about 20 years and he lost his parents when he was a child. He’s a very smart guy and an excellent worker. He’s a spinner of silk. Renzo is a genuine, nice and honest person, but he also is really impulsive.

Lucia is one of the main characters. She's about 20 years, she's a spinner and a peasant. Lucia is of a good nature with a moral and religious integrity: these virtues help her to overcome obstacles.

She's a young woman of modest beauty: she has got long hair, black eyebrows and a beautiful smile.&nbsp; At the end she will be Renzo's wife.
