Summary
The Poet X
This chapter book focuses on a young female Xiomara Barista during a six month period and how she uses poetry to express her feelings in a Harlem neighborhood where she does not feel like she is being heard by her parents. Xiomara feels alone in her journey of becoming a teenager and her experiences in a toxic home accelerates her personal growth of becoming an independent person. Majority of the conflicts and joys Xiomara faced were brought on by her mom’s strict rules because of her religious beliefs and high expectations of her daughter's education. Xiomara is a twin and was not blessed with the same intelligence as her twin. A reason why her parents do not value her opinions. The comparison of the twins hurts Xiomara and as she begins to question and struggles with some religious practices. Her relationship with her mom continues to spiral out of control further weakening the way they communicate with one another. Xiomara’s maturity did not go without the challenges of her curiosity for sexual content and shifting through the entanglement of those emotions. Her discovery of romance teaches her to seek relationships that are good role models unlike her father who did not give her any attention.
