INTRODUCTION
Let's be honest... learning scales is boring. However, having a good knowledge of them is an important part of any musician's development.

This book is designed to make this process a bit more fun by playing major scale patterns along with a cool jazz rhythm section. It will also help you with your sense of pulse and swing.

Many musicians believe they 'know their scales' because they had to perform them for an instrument exam which means starting the scale at the bottom, playing to the top and coming back down again. These are then internalised as stand-alone exercises. To become fluent in actually playing in any particular key (rather than just learning the scale shape) it's important to be able to play different patterns based on the scale.

Knowing a scale is not the same thing as being able to think in that key.
HOW THE PRACTICE TRACKS WORK
Every track has 3 different versions at 3 different speeds (80 beats per minute, 120 bpm and 160 bpm). This means you can work on the patterns slowly to begin with.

- 80 bpm is a typical tempo for a ballad
- 120 bpm is a typical 'medium' tempo for a jazz tune
- 160 bpm is heading more towards 'bebop' territory.

There are 2 sets of play buttons. The set on the left hand side of the page are for Patterns 1 and 2 and the second set on the right hand side of the page are for Patterns 3 and 4.

Just click on the relevant play button to start each track.

Enjoy!
