Tower Bridge crosses the River Thames at the east end of London. From the beginning of its existence, it was considered a masterpiece of contemporary engineering. It was compared with the famous Eiffel Tower, built five years earlier. A huge, weighing more than 2,000 tons, steam driven bridge mechanism regulated the opening of its central part. It allowed the passage of tall ships. The old bridge mechanism is not used, it has been replaced with an electrical device.
