Welcome to the 2017-2018 Jet Gazette!

It is amazing we have only been in school for just over a month and we have already achieved so much! In this issue of the Jet Gazette, you will see all of the incredible things that the students and teachers accomplish on a daily basis at DIS. I am proud to be a part of this outstanding community of parents, students, teachers, and staff. One of the many things I love about DIS is the diversity of our academics and activities. On any given day, a student could create a musical piece, learn Spanish, shoot a rocket in Physical Science, film an episode of Jet Stream News, conquer an AP Calculus question, and practice for an upcoming volleyball tournament. I am excited to see how our teachers and students will add to the achievements of DIS throughout the school year. We are Determined to be responsible on campus and in the community, Intellectual and creative in the classroom, and Successful in our athletics and activities. Please be sure to check back monthly and see all that our students and teachers accomplish!

Sincerely,
Chris Murphy
DIS Headmaster

Dear DIS Students:

I am excited to join Daegu International School this fall as the College Counselor. My goal is to provide each student with timely and accurate counseling to navigate the college decision process. Along this journey, I will provide students with numerous opportunities to be exposed to various colleges and universities. As well as help students plan their high school academic program and provide guidance with developing post-graduation goals. I am also available to meet with students to discuss individual concerns.

I look forward to the new school year, as well as to meeting all of you both in and around campus. If at any time you have a question, please do not hesitate to stop by my office (312) and I’ll be glad to help!

First Grade
Grade 1 students visited Bong Mu Lake to make discoveries and observations like scientists. They collected bugs, shells, leaves, and rocks. Some students even carried a large log back to school to use in the ECC building. Students will visit the lake again in November to compare how it looked in summer to fall.

Miss Huang-National Chinese Honor Society
On September 5th, The National Chinese Honor Society held its first meeting of the year with Ms. Huang. The NCHS is a scholastic organization that promotes and recognizes students who demonstrate citizenship, leadership, and community service. The purpose of the NCHS is to encourage its members to become life-long learners in order to gain a better understanding of the Chinese language and its culture, as well as to play an active role as a contributing global citizen in the twenty-first century. Currently, DIS NCHS has 11 members.
Miss Lee-AP Language (Grade 11)
AP Language students had a skype chat with the author of their summer reading book. The book is named Thank You for Arguing by Jay Heinrichs. Mr. Heinrichs and the students discussed everyday situations that using the right words and techniques can help with. They also talked about current world events. The students commented on how great it was to talk to a real author and how much fun it was.
