The beginning

On a bright, sunny day, Liam was coming back home from school. He had asked his mom to pick him up since he hadn’t felt like walking home.
“Liam,” his mom said, “I bought you a gift today for doing so well in school.” Liam stood up in his seat and puffed his chest. “A gift? For me?” Liam’s eyes lit up with excitement. “I got you a bicycle!” exclaimed his mom. All the excitement in Liam’s face was erased. “I think instead of getting around by car, you should ride your bike.”

Liam was so disappointed; he tried so hard not to argue with his mother. “You know I don’t like bikes,” he said, crossing his arms. “Well yes, but this way you can help the environment. You know that cars are so harmful to it.”
She knew he wasn’t listening, so they made a quick stop before going home. “Where are we going?” Liam asked angrily. He didn’t receive an answer until the car stopped. He followed his mom to the nearby beach.

The sad truth

“ What on earth are we doing here?”
After five minutes of walking, they got to a deserted part of the beach. There, they saw something out of anyone’s worst nightmare. “What... are those?!“
“Dead fish,” answered his mom. “From all the fossil fuels that get spilled into the sea every day, the same fuels that are used to run cars,” explained Liam’s mother.
“This is why I bought you that present. If we don’t help the environment, no one will.”

Liam was deeply affected by the sight and decided to turn this experience into a research project. With guidance from his science teacher, he spoke passionately, “I want to find out how these fish died and what we can do to stop it from happening again.”

The journey

His research question became clear: “How do fossil fuels impact marine life?” Liam, determined, voiced his hypothesis, “I believe the more fossil fuels there are, the worse the impact on marine ecosystems.”
To collect data, Liam utilized the GLOBE protocol, measuring the levels of pollutants in the water and documenting the impact on marine life. He spoke to his friends, “We need to be the eyes for the sea, guys!” After weeks of observation and data collection, he stood before his classmates and said, “Look, we’ve got evidence now!” He analyzed the results and found a clear
correlation between fossil fuel concentration and the presence of dead fish.

Motivated by these findings, Liam took action. He initiated a campaign in his school, passionately stating, “It’s time to ditch the cars and embrace bikes!”
He organized workshops, urging, “Let’s spread the word about the dangers of fossil fuels on our marine friends.”

The realization

His research project was presented at a local science fair, and Liam proudly declared, “We can make a difference, starting right here!” It garnered attention and support from environmental experts and the municipality.

As a result, Liam’s efforts led to the implementation of sustainable transportation initiatives in the community. He spoke to the mayor, “We can have bike-sharing programs to reduce our carbon footprint!” And indeed, bike-sharing programs were introduced, reducing the reliance on cars and lowering carbon emissions.
Additionally, Liam’s project increased community awareness about the detrimental effects of fossil fuels on the environment. He addressed a local gathering, “We have the power to protect our oceans, and it starts with us!” His words fostered a sense of responsibility.

Furthermore, inspired by Liam’s dedication, other students joined the cause. Together, they formed a community environmental group, and Liam encouraged them with, “We can achieve more when we work together!” They collaborated with local organizations, experts, and the municipality to implement measures for the improvement of water quality and the protection of marine life.
Liam’s transformation from a reluctant bike rider to a proactive environmentalist included many direct speeches.
It not only contributed to scientific inquiry but also had a tangible impact on climate action and community involvement.
