What an exceptional founding year for Leigh Academy Rainham and it has only been possible as a result of all the hard work of our wonderful staff body and families who have contributed so well to Academy life. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved this year and in this special edition we have included articles from our students who were eager to share what they have experienced as a result of joining LAR.

Our founding Year 7 cohort have received over 33,500 reward points collectively this year as a result of persistently making positive choices to meet our exceptionally high expectations. We reward points for our LEIGH Learner Attributes of Leadership, Emotional Intelligence, Inquisitiveness, Grit and Humility. We set the expectation for our first cohort of students to dream big, believe in themselves and achieve well and they have set ambitious goals for themselves in all aspects of academy life. This year we are proud to say they have collectively raised over £4200 for their chosen charities, conducted 20 community litter picks, are in the top 20% of schools in the world for their engagement with learning Spanish on Languagenut, are 11th out of 750 schools for engagement with Sparx Maths, delivered 120 shoeboxes to elderly residents in the community and 98% have taken part in at least one co-curricular club! In addition both the boys and girls teams came second out of 17 academies in the Trust Sports Day.

I am very confident that when we welcome our new year 6 students they will have an equally exceptional year!
Mayor of Medway
We were thrilled to welcome the Mayor of Medway at Leigh Academy Rainham.
She has proudly supported the application for a free school in Medway from the start of the process and was delighted to see what we have achieved this year and to speak to the students.
Thank you so much for visiting us!

Bank of England

LAR welcomed Chris Dare, the former director of the Bank of England. This visit was arranged to raise students awareness of financial security and careers in the financial industry. Today Chris shared his career path with students and highlighted the importance of both banking and finance. This included: the significance of saving by opening a savers account and why interest rates differ and are affected by global events. Students were highly engaged and asked Chris some fantastic questions such as: what pathways they could do to work in banking or finance as well as transferable skills would be best needed.
Chris also commented on how inquisitive are students were during this guest speaker and would like to return again next year in offering workshops.

This exposes students to limitless cross-curricular connections provoking students to make fascinating links and cumulatively gain knowledge which is embedded in their long term memory. It is our duty to ensure that students leave the academy with the necessary personal, academic and social skills and cultural capital needed to thrive and succeed in their chosen careers.
Our intent is that our curriculum:

Provides a broad, innovative and balanced curriculum that is challenging, comprehensive, underpinned by the principles of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme and is accessible to all pupils, regardless of prior attainment, academic ability or need.
OUR MYP CURRICULUM
Delivers opportunities for students to become accomplished and reflective lifelong learners, with useful, transferable skills and well embedded schemas of knowledge.
This is a prudent time to remind our community about the intent behind our curriculum and this is why I would like to share our new curriculum intent.
Curriculum at Leigh Academy Rainham is defined as the blueprint for all that will be taught, learnt and experienced by students within and beyond the classroom environment.
Students will leave with enhanced digital literacy and understanding across a range of disciplines, including numeracy, and literacy.
Fosters a culture in which students are independent, highly ambitious and achieve excellent outcomes , opening doors to a variety of future opportunities and enabling them to access further education and careers of their choice.
Our vision that pupils will ‘Dream, Believe and Achieve’ is underpinned by the high quality curriculum on offer that is not only broad and innovative but designed to improve the life chances of our young people. Students will not only become masters in each of the disciplines but understand holistic overarching concepts that link academic and vocational subjects, PSHRE and the fundamental British values; this will be achieved through an ongoing cycle of inquiry, application, assessment and improvement.
Expands students' perspectives through a range of spiritual, moral, social and cultural opportunities, creating globally aware young citizens with a sense of moral and social responsibility who also have the necessary IB Learner qualities to overcome the challenges they are likely to encounter in life.

OUR MYP CURRICULUM
This intent has developed over the last year in conjunction with staff and students. We have seen the effects of our globally aware curriculum in all that has been said by visitors to the academy. They have commented on students' ability to articulate ideas beyond their years, how their work is of an incredibly high standard and perhaps most importantly how polite and well mannered they are.
The Chromebooks have truly allowed staff to take students around the world. From Florence in English, exploring what it is like in a modern and vibrant city. San Diego in Maths to look at incredible architecture, the historical city of Jerusalem, galleries in Art, and following the voyage of refugees in Geography. They have allowed students access to things and places they have never seen and encouraged learning which is rooted in contextual understanding.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank staff for all their continued efforts to provide a curriculum which is truly unique and I greatly look forward to seeing where we go in the future.
