Sport nell’antica Grecia
In ancient Greece sport was originally associated with the religious, military and aristocratic realm of society. Only over time sport became secularized and came to be recognized as a professional activity. Greeks are the ancient people who has most profoundly cultivated the athletic ideal. Theirs was a competitive society in which winning was fundamental to prove one’s own worth in the community. The origin of sport in ancient Greece dates back to the culture of funeral rites and the hero’s cult. Being athletic was also tied up to the aristocratic ideology. In fact, the aristocratic man and the athlete shared a series of values: physical superiority, the desire of primacy, glory and the scorn for the loser. The most important games , the Olympiads, started in 776 B.C. and went on uninterruptedly for eleven centuries until 394 A.D., when Emperor Theodosius suspended them. Those were games in honor of Zeus, in which all Greeks took part. On that occasion, came into force “the Olympic Peace”, which was a period when Greeks suspended all wars so that everyone could go to Olympia without incurring into any hazards.
