Anne Frank workshop

Our Year 6 pupils were fortunate enough to take part in a workshop about the life and legacy of Anne Frank. This was an excellent opportunity for the pupils to develop their understanding of the Holocaust, its causes and the importance of challenging prejudice and discrimination in modern society. This was a very challenging workshop which asked pupils to explore upsetting and mature content, as well as develop their speaking and listening skills- we are so proud of how well the selected pupils represented themselves and their school!&nbsp; Following the workshop, Year 6 children from both sites were invited to visit the exhibition which was led by our wonderful ambassadors. It was brilliant seeing how engaged and supportive the pupils were of their peers- we were particularly impressed by the thoughtful and inquisitive questions they asked! Please speak to your children about what they learnt.

Mini Olympics.

Well done to our mini olympians who competed at the Newham Leisure Centre on Wednesday. Our two teams represented&nbsp; South Africa and India. Pupils took part in 6 events that included Speed Bounce , running and various throwing events. Our Olympians showed true Upton Cross spirit and values by showing determination and perseverance. It was also great to see the respect shown to the secondary sports leaders who helped run the events. Well done Olympians, we are proud of you!

Is my child well enough to be in school?

Here at Upton Cross, we create an environment where every child can discover their own potential and love of learning. It is no surprise that pupil attainment is linked closely with pupil attendance. The following list will assist parents on when their children should be absent in relation to illnesses. If you are unsure whether your child can be in school, please speak to the school office who can advise further. If your child has been prescribed antibiotics, these can be administered in school by a first aider (3A school form to be completed). Unless stated otherwise by a doctor (in writing), your child can attend school.

Information Regarding Measles

Please see the below message from the NHS regarding Measles: Measles cases are rising across the country, with over 102,000 children starting primary school in England being at risk of catching the disease. Measles is highly infectious and if left unvaccinated nine out of ten children in an early years setting can catch the disease if just one child is infectious. We are so excited to restart our Stay and Play sessions this academic year at Kirton Road. Stay and Play sessions from Friday 15th September 2023. These sessions&nbsp;will take place on a Friday between 9am- 11am and parents/ carers are invited to join their toddler in some fun sensory experiences. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.&nbsp; We look forward to seeing you there!

Eco Warriors

Congratulations to the children that have been selected by their class as Eco Warriors. Our Eco Warriors will wear a badge and represent their class at whole school meetings. They will learn more about climate change and feel empowered to take action in their school community. They will develop leadership, communication, problem solving and teamwork skills.

Anti-Bullying Week 2023!&nbsp;

Monday 13th – Friday 17th November is Anti-Bullying Week 2023 and the theme this year is ‘Make a noise about Bullying’. The week will begin with Odd Socks Day which will take place on the Tuesday of Anti Bullying Week, Tuesday 14th November, to help raise awareness for Anti-Bullying Week. Throughout the week, our children will learn about the importance of speaking out against bullying and what to do if they see bullying. Lunch Time Choir Club

Our Year 3 and 4 choir club were working in harmony as they began learning the first verse of a Nina Simone song “I wish I knew how it would feel to be free.” They are really looking forward to their next lesson.

Congratulations to this week's winners. Our students have continued to make excellent progress with their reading, and we are thrilled to see so many of them earning tokens for the vending machine. Today, many students were able to claim a book of their own from the vending machine, which they can keep forever. The vending machine is filled with a wide range of books to suit all ages and interests, and we are confident that our students will find something that they will love. We believe that this program is a fantastic way to encourage a love of reading and to help our students to develop essential literacy skills.

Important Dates

Year 5/6 Writing Workshop

Ten of Year 5/6 pupils were lucky enough to take part in an ‘Aim High’ writing workshop with Neal Zetter, who visited us in school earlier this term, at Stratford Library. This was an excellent opportunity for pupils to develop their planning, writing and editing skills. Pupils wrote poems based around the theme of ‘refuge’ and it was wonderful hearing/reading all the different approaches they took to the theme- one pupil even wrote from the perspective of a stray cat who finally found a home! Stratford Library is a fantastic place and we heavily encourage you to visit during the half-term break with your children- happy reading!
