Who We Are:

The Lakota Education Association (LEA) is made up of approximately 1000 certified/licensed employees. Certified staff in Lakota include all Teachers, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech Therapists, Psychologists, and Guidance Counselors. Full time, part time, and any substitute employee in the same position for at least sixty continuous days can be a member. The LEA is recognized as the exclusive and sole bargaining agent for the bargaining unit which means individuals are NOT able to negotiate terms of their contract. Any negotiation is for ALL members and is done through the LEA. The LEA operates under the LEA Constitution & Bylaws which is approved through the general membership. Every level of involvement is important, starting with YOU!

Individual Members
Our strength in negotiating a strong contract is the number of members in our union. We have maintained 95-97% of our staff as members. That gives us power with our administration. That power begins with you. Our members are divided among twenty -four buildings.

Building Representatives
Each building has LEA building representatives that hold different roles in the building and are elected each year. Allocation of representatives are 1:15 active members in the building. These representatives do very important work. Their duties include but are not limited to: attend monthly or bimonthly meetings, communicate information to/from members, assist standing committees, serve as co-chair of building FAC, and post important communications in the building.
Executive Committee
There are 14 Standing Committees that make up the Executive Committee. Those standing committee chairs are recommended and voted on each year by the President to the Representative Committee. All positions may be filled but are not required each year depending on the need.
Those committees are:

Constitution and Bylaws, Grievance
Health Plan/Insurance
Human Relations, Membership
Negotiations, Nomination and Election
Public Relations, Communications
FCPE/Political Activism
Safety & Health, Web Site
Faculty Advisory, Unity, New Member
