The 1920's marked an era of excitement, freedom, and American pride. Following the WWI victory, Americans enjoyed parties and innovations that redefined America apart from the rest of the world. This is expressed in their fashion as dresses were straighter, looser, slender, and had shortened hemlines. Women were no longer restricted by their clothing but allowed to more freely express themselves, just as Americans as a country, were able to make their mark as a world superpower.
Into the
1930's
Similar to the 1920's, the 1930's kept the fitted shape to dresses. However, this decade introduced a looser skirt, which was highly influenced by the trends of Hollywood. This new style created a softer, feminine shape that highlighted a women's body.

Coming out of the
1940-1950's
The 1940's kept the style of the loose skirt. This decade, however, shortened their dresses to calf or knee length. While jackets had a more squared shoulder. This redefinition of feminine fashion came with the changing tide of increased patriotism as the United States became a more dominant superpower following the victory of World War II. This style continued throughout the 1950's as the United States continues to assert dominance throughout the Cold War.

Inspired by contemporary architecture, the 1960's took on a more relaxed clothing. This can be seen in bias-cut clothes, short skirts, exaggerated makeup and short hair. This trend was highly influenced by Jackie Kennedy who's high end fashion embraced a mood of informality and comfort.
