The International Space Station

It can grow to very large heights. The tallest tree in Ireland is a Douglas Fir in Powerscourt, Co. Wicklow. Its height is 61.5 metres. That’s only slightly less than the tallest building in Cork, The Elysian. It’s also the 7th highest tree in Europe.

Once there was a Greek god and he lived in a castle and near his house there was a yew tree and he thought it look disgusting so he decided to chop down the tree but first he wanted to see if it had anything to do with evil, the first thing he checked the bark he said in looked funny then he checked the spikes he got spiked by the spike... the next day he was found dead

One of the modules on the ISS is called Colombus. It was built in Europe and is a laboratory where astronauts can perform scientific experiments. From the outside it looks like a big can.

Like everyone else, the astronauts on board the ISS need to eat and drink. They need to breathe too but unlike everyone else they cannot just open a window if they feel like having some fresh air. The astronauts also need materials for their scientific experiments, and sometimes they need spare parts to fix worn out or broken parts of the space station.

All these supplies are sent up from Earth in rockets or in an automatic space truck called the Automated Transfer Vehicle or ATV. It has automatic systems allowing it to fly to the ISS without any astronauts on board to fly it.

The toilets also need to be emptied. Yuck!!!!!

In Japan there is a myth that from the first cherry blossom tree sprouted a young girl who played the violin. When she sprouted she started playing the violin all the other trees stared dancing and lots more cherry blossom trees stared growing

There is a male and female flower. It can tell what are eating it’s leaves.

The tallest ash in Ireland measures forty meters in height and is happily growing in Clonmel co Tipperary.

The common ash tree is Ireland’s most common tallest native tree. It is a deciduous tree and after it has been cut down it is able to re-sprout and start growing again. .

The flat broad leaves grow opposite each other in pairs on a long stem and oval shape that narrows into a point at the end 

The seeds of the common ash tree looks like a great big bunch of keys so as you could guess they are commonly known as keys. These seeds provide food for lots of wildlife such as birds , mice and squirrels. 

In Ireland the Irish yew tree is one of the fewest trees in the native evergreen trees.

The yew tree is the oldest tree in Northern Europe

The fir tree have needle like leaves that grow from the branch.

*They shed around August and the grow back in Spring

*When the sun shines on its leaves the leaves shine silver

Fir trees are evergreen conifers.evergreen trees are trees that keep their leaves or needles all year long.

There are over forty different types of species of fir trees in the world 

A conifer is a tree that bears cones,needles or scale like leaves.the fir tree is the tree that we take home to decorate for christmas.

The ISS is the biggest object humans have ever built in space. It travels around the Earth at a speed of 28,000 km per hour, about 400 km above our heads. On a clear night it is possible to see it from Earth. It looks like a wandering star as it passes in the sky above you.

Even though everything in space is weightless it is still very hard work. Astronauts have to push and pull in all sorts of awkward positions. And there is no solid ground for them to push against.

They also use Robotic arms to help them move things around outside the Space Station.

Interesting Fact!  These trees can grow (15 to 25 meters) / (50 to 75 feet)

I have a cherry blossom tree in my garden and it is about three metres tall it would of been around six metres tall but we had to cut it a little because it was getting to close to the wires. My house is about a hundred and fifty years old but the tree is only possibly fifty years old. And when we moved into are house ten years ago and the cherry blossom tree was already planted.

Astronauts on board the space station also have to exercise regularly as the zero gravity can make them weak. They have to be tied down to be able to take a run on a treadmill.

Leaves: The leaves grow in March and April and fall of again in November. The leaves grow all over the tree

Astronauts on board the space station eat a lot of the same food we eat on Earth. They have meat, cereals, cheese, vegetables, biscuits, yoghurt, cakes, crackers and they drink coffee, tea, fizzy drinks, milk and juices. It is important for astronauts to eat healthily to make sure they get all the nutrition they will need to be able to survive in space.

It is difficult to bring fresh food up to the space station because it takes several days to deliver it. A lot of the food has to be dehydrated or dried out. This means that any water in the food has been taken out meaning it will last longer.

Ash woods are found in the Buren   co Clare and the hanging rock in south Fermanagh. 

The Douglas Fir is the most common forest tree of north west America. It is not native to Ireland but was brought to Europe in the 1800’s by a man named Douglas.

As the Douglas Fir grows, the bark changes from a grey to a reddish colour.

If you crush some leaves in the palm of your hand, you will get a lovely citrus smell.

The Douglas Fir is very popular with deers who like to nibble at the shoots.

The leaves are large and mound .they look more like bushes than trees

The most tallest tree is the Beech tree

And finally for all those who love taking selfies how about this for the ultimate Selfie. 

The leaves of ash are found directly across from each other.Ash is among one of the first trees to loose its leaves in Autumn.

How long does it take for Hazel trees to grow?

It takes two to five years for a Hazel tree to grow.

The International Space Station or ISS is a floating laboratory where astronauts can live for months at a time. It is full of equipment for doing science experiments. 

The experiments that astronauts do on the Space Station teach us many things we need to know before humans can travel further out into space and a lot of the new knowledge will be useful on Earth too.

A tree that is believed to be a yew tree is growing in a churchyard I Forting-all, Scotland.

Yew trees are found in central and Southern Europe,northern west Africa,Northern Iran and south west Asia 

Many countries are working together to build the space station. The USA, Russia, Canada, Japan Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom are all working together on the ISS. The station is constantly being added to. It is as long as a football pitch and was taken up by rockets piece by piece before being assembled like a large lego structure.

It isn&apos;t all work on board the ISS. Sometimes the astronauts get to have a little fun. This is Commander Chris Hadfield from Canada juggling tomatoes. 

He also recorded a song in space. This was the first song to be recorded in space.

When the astronauts have unloaded the space truck they fill it with the stations rubbish and send it back down to Earth. It doesn&apos;t actually reach Earth though. It burns up high above the Pacific ocean with nothing left to cause any pollution.

The cherry blossom tree is native to Japan but grows all the world. The blossom tree is known for it’s beautiful pink blossom in the spring. Cherry blossom trees are very popular in Japan, they even hold festivals in the spring just for looking and admiring them. They also have streets lined with cherry blossom trees and there are great tourist attractions (They grow around 20-40feet tall and 15-30 feet wide)

The Latin word for an ash tree is fraxinus. The Irish word for an ash tree is crann fuinseoige. The scientific word for an ash tree is fraxinus

The cones of a Douglas Fir are very distinctive from true fir trees. They have papery scales, and between each scale is a small, brown, three-pointed leaf called a bract. 

It might look like it’s covered in sharp needles but they are actually soft to touch.

One Native American myth explains that each of these little three-pointed leaves is the tail and two back legs of a mouse. Mice are said to have hidden inside tree cones during forest fires.

Hazel trees grow across much of Europe, parts of North Africa and Western Asia.
