Letters home from Ellis IslandLoading...
Dear Jacob,
I am on the boat the time i'm writing this. I am in steerage. I am going to America to get a better job and also because of poverty and religious intolerance, that existed where I lived. There are about 3,000 people on the boat. For every meal we ate came from buckets. People in first class are throwing fruits down from the uppers deck like apples and oranges. I have a place to sleep but it is really cramped because there are so many people. I have been on the boat for 2 weeks now. The boat trip was so boring, it won't be long until I get to Ellis Island.
Sincerely, Seth
Dear Jacob,
I have arrived at Ellis Island. The first thing I saw was the Statue of Liberty. All the people cheered and wept with joy. The first and second class passengers were checked by health inspectors for diseases on the boat. The third class passengers waited for a ferryboat to pick them up and bring them to Ellis Island. I am in third class so I had to wait to get to Ellis Island
Sincerely, Seth

Dear Jacob,
I am now at Ellis Island. Once I got off the ferryboat I went to the baggage room, the officers passed out numbered ID tags. Then I put my bags down and left the baggage room.
Sincerely, Seth
Dear Jacob,
The next thing I did was go to the stairs. Doctors stood at the top of the stairs. They were looking for signs of trouble breathing, walking and other signs of health problems. Then I went to the registry room its nicknamed the great hall because its so big. In the registry room I went through the medical exam and legal inspection. There were long metal rails that kept the lines in order. The people that made the registry room made it really big and rectangular. The thing that I was scared about in the registry room was the buttonhook. They use the buttonhook to flip your eyelid to see if you have a disease called trachoma. I was really scared. They said to stay still and I’ll be fine. When they did it they said I was good to go. It was better than I thought!
Sincerely, Seth

Dear Jacob,
I have just gone through the medical exam. The doctors gave me a quick six second physical, during it they looked for signs of sickness such as illness, contagious disease and shortness of breath. Immigrants that were sick were marked with a P on their back and then sent for further examination. Luckily I was not marked with a P. Since I wasn't marked with a P I went to the legal inspection. People that were really sick went to quarantine. I saw all the sick people going to quarantine, they didn't look happy. Some of the people were also sent back home.
Sincerely, Seth
Dear Jacob,
I went through the legal inspection. I had to answer 29 questions that an inspector told me. I was afraid I wouldn’t pass. I needed an interpreter because at the time I couldn't speak english. After I answered all the questions, I worried I wouldn’t be able to go to America because of all my answers. Then they finally told me I passed. I was so happy! Im lucky I passed because if not I would be sent for further questioning.
