Please explain what a medical alert phone?

A medical alert phone is a phone that dos't have games on it.

Since my dad has type 1 diabetes, I used his tester.

A tester is a thing that reads your blood 

Why do you take needles, and how do you take needles?

I take needles to get insulin because my pancreas doesn't make insulin like yours do anything. I can do anything like you, except make insulin. I won't have energy if I don't have the insulin so I have to take them a lot.

If there is not enough sugar in my body, or if there is too much sugar in my body my phone alerts me and lets me know that I have to do something.

Why did you feel scared by all of this? Maybe you had just stayed up too late and you were over tired? Maybe you were thirsty because it was a really hot day and you hadn't drank enough water to stay hydrated?

I was scared because my Mom wanted to test my blood and it kind of hurt. She tested my blood because my Dad is Type 1 Diabetic and sometimes diabetes when your sugars go high it can make you really thirsty. She wondered if maybe I had diabetes, just like my Dad....

Hi my name is Esha and in this book I'm going to be interviewing my friend Maya so that we can learn more about Diabetes for Diabetes Awareness Month. Maya is seven years old and she found out when she was five that she has Type 1 Diabetes. Maya, can you explain what Type 1 Diabetes is?

Hi, my name is Maya. When I was five I started feeling sick. I was drinking a LOT more water than I usually did and I was going to the washroom ALL the time!  I did not have my usual energy to play with my friends, my brother, and my sister.  I felt a tiny bit scared. 

It is called a sensor to test my blood. It is a needle that I change every ten days.

Why do you eat snacks like treats at school when it is not time to eat?

I might pass out if I don't eat sugar to regulate my blood levels. My body does not handle sugar the same way yours does.  My Mom explained to me that there was a Super Hero in my body who thought that my pancreas was making me sick so the Super Hero tried to get rid of my pancreas. This super hero was really powerful and it did a good job because my pancreas stopped working.

Why do you carry that bag where-ever you go at school?

I don't just take it to school,I take it every-were I go. It has extra sugar tablets, a juice box, and my phone in it. When my blood sugars go low, I need to have sugar quickly so that I don't pass out.
