In year 6 we have been celebrating cultural diversity.

Children and young people have the same general human rights as adults and also specific rights that recognise their special needs. Children are neither the property of their parents nor are they helpless objects of charity. They are human beings and are the subject of their own rights.&nbsp; The Convention on the Rights of the Child sets out the rights that must be realized for children to develop to their full potential. How can we all work together to support the rights of each child?

We were on a live lesson with Tiphaine - a French expert; we asked her some questions about the French language and culture. Here are her responses: How tall is the Eiffel Tower? 324 metres. How do you eat snails without getting sick? They cook the snails with a mixture. How do you say some animals in French? cat/chat, horse/cheval, dolphin/dauphin. What flavours of ice cream does France have? They have the same flavours as England. What animals are native to France? Wolf, Bear, Fox. Does France have a royal family? No they don’t. What takeaways do you have in France? Chinese, McDonalds. Do you have different models of cars?&nbsp; The same as England apart from in France cars are more expensive. Are there dead bodies buried under the Arc de Triomphe? Yes 1 mysterious body. What are the massive sticks of bread called? Baguettes. What is the climate like in France? It depends on where you live but it is usually in line with the seasons.

Welcome to our Year 6 Empathy Book

During Empathy Week we celebrated the stories of 5 people from a diverse range of backgrounds and explored their journeys of resilience and empathy. Their amazing stories speak of racism, grief, mental health, stereotypes, being a refugee as well as leadership, entrepreneurship, resilience, the power of people, sport, music and empathy.

Everyone, everywhere has the same rights as a result of our common humanity. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible. We have continued to celebrate cultural diversity by studying these and thinking about the importance of each article within our everyday lives.

We are lucky enough to have lots of children within our school and within year 6 whose first language is not English. Children researched various languages and taught each other some common phrases from their own first languages. 

We are proud of our home languages and culture.
